Now, Internet users in China will need to register | Firstpost

Beijing: China?s government tightened Internet controls on Friday with approval of a law that requires users to register their names after a flood of online complaints about official abuses rattled Communist Party leaders.

Authorities say the law will strengthen protections for personal information. But it also is likely to curtail the Internet?s status as a forum to complain about the government or publicize corruption.

?Their intention is very clear: It is to take back that bit of space for public opinion, that freedom of speech hundreds of millions of Chinese Internet users have strived for,? said Murong Xuecun, a prominent Chinese writer.

The rules approved by China?s national legislature highlight the chronic tension between the ruling Communist Party?s desire to reap technology?s benefits and its insistence on controlling information.

Beijing encourages Web use for business and education but tries to block material deemed subversive or obscene. It has steadily stepped up censorship, especially after social media played a role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

The latest measure requires users to provide their real names and other identifying information when they register with access providers or post information publicly.

?This is needed for the healthy development of the Internet,? said Li Fei, deputy director of the legislature?s Legal Work Committee, at a news conference.

Li rejected complaints that the public will be deprived of a forum that has been used to expose misconduct.

?The country?s constitution protects citizens? rights in supervising and criticizing the state and government officials? behavior,? Li said.

The measure comes amid reports that Beijing might be disrupting use of software that allows Web surfers to see sites abroad that are blocked by its extensive filters.

At the same time, regulators have proposed rules that would bar foreign companies from distributing books, news, music and other material online in China.

The government has given no indication how it will deal with the technical challenge of registering the more than 500 million Chinese who use the Internet.

Microblog operators, two of which say they have more than 300 million users each, were ordered last year to confirm the identities of users but acknowledge they have yet to complete that task.

The main ruling party newspaper, People?s Daily, has called weeks for tighter Internet controls, saying rumors spread online have harmed the public.

The secretive ruling party is uneasy about the public?s eagerness to discuss politics and sensitive issues online despite threats of punishment.

In March, authorities scrambled to squelch online rumors about a possible coup amid a political crisis that led to the downfall of a prominent party figure, Bo Xilai, ahead of the party?s fall leadership transition. A dozen websites were closed and six people detained.

This week, 70 prominent Chinese scholars and lawyers circulated an online petition this week appealing for free speech, independent courts and for the ruling party to encourage private enterprise.

Communist leaders who see the Internet as a promising source of economic growth were slow to enforce the same level of control they impose on movies, books and other media, apparently for fear of hurting e-commerce and other fledgling online businesses.

Until recently, Web surfers could post anonymous comments online or on microblogs.

That gave ordinary Chinese a unique opportunity to express themselves to a public audience in a society where newspapers, television and other media all are state-controlled. Some of the most popular microbloggers have millions of readers.

It also made the Internet a clearinghouse for accusations of official misconduct.

A local party official in China?s southwest was fired in November after scenes from a videotape of him having sex with a young woman spread quickly on websites.

Web surfers can circumvent filters by using virtual private networks ? encryption software that is used by companies for financial data and other sensitive information. But VPN users say disruptions began in 2011 and are increasing, suggesting regulators are trying to block encrypted traffic.

Fitness Tips for Lorry and Motorcycle drivers

Certain jobs require huge amounts of sitting down, as I?m sure you are aware it is very hard to live a healthy lifestyle by sitting down all the time. There are also claims that sitting down can seriously damage health, however I suspect this is because merely because of correlation and not causation. Lorry drivers are at a certain advantage because they have a huge lorry to carry some equipment, while on a bike you are slightly more limited as to what you can carry.

For a lorry driver it?s worth investing in some kettle bells. For some these are the weapon of choice as kettlebell workouts?do offer an extensive full body workout. If you are familiar with workouts such as the 300 workout you will know that when it comes to the kettlebell push press it is absolutely killer!

In the picture below there are 6 exercises you can do to increase your fitness. Kettlebell workouts benefit you both in a cardiovascular way and help build muscle. You can also incorporate intense interval training or use heavier kettlebells to stimulate more muscle growth.

kettle

So what kind of kettlebell should you look for?

Ideally you want a range of kettlebells for different exercises however if you had to go with just one I would say you should aim around the 10kg mark. This doesn?t sound like a lot but when you get into the 50 rep range this will have a mighty effect.

Bikers don?t have the luxury of being able to carry around a load of weights and benches on their person. So instead of kettle bells bikers should use resistant bands for training instead. They are lightweight and can be packed into almost any compartment. I was checking out the bikes on www.erento.co.uk and almost all of them have small compartments which are ideal for storing fitness bands.

Here are a few diagrams illustrating workouts that can be done with fitness bands.

fitbands

With fitness bands again it?s repetition that is going to be the overwhelming factor when it comes to helping you stay fit.

General Tips

You don?t need a gym to get fit. The world is quite literally your gym, before you make any long trips search for outdoor gym parks which are becoming increasingly popular across the UK and Europe. Pre prepare your food, eating take away food from the side of roads is not a healthy option by any means. If you can afford any equipment then high intensity interval bodyweight exercises are what you want to be doing.

Western Horse Riding Style Verse English ? Sports and Recreation

The name ?English? does suggest origin in a specific country, but the English horse riding style is amongst the two most well-liked universal riding styles, together with the Western riding style. English style riding can be seen in lots of variations, but there are certain elementary factors that are common to all variations, and these elements clearly distinguish this form of riding from Western or other riding styles.

Likely the 1st and most clearly obvious distinguishing factor is the saddle. Whatever purpose the pony is being used for, if it is being ridden in the English style, it?ll have an English saddle. This saddle is rather flat; it doesn?t have the deepness of seat that typicalizes the Western saddle. It also lacks a saddle horn. The English saddle is designed to allow full freedom of movement to the horse, no matter the discipline it is engaged with. You can see this for yourself if you should watch a pony engaged in English riding: it?ll go through varied activities like classic dressage and racing, activities that demand quite a lot of freedom of movement.

English riding comprises numerous sub-styles, all distinguished by the requirement for both hands to be on the reins. This technique allows better control over the horse and switches the focus from pony to rider. Riders using the English style will rise and sit during trots in tune with the horse?s rhythm, whereas riders utilizing the Western style will stay put in their saddles.

A lot of people consider English riding the ideal setting to demonstrate a horse?s inherent power and grace, and this can be simply seen in all the events utilizing the style. Just consider dressage, which is a way of coaching and competing. Riders always use an English saddle at dressage, which is a riding form that gives maximum exposure to the horse?s riding potential. Dressage is meant to showcase equine precision in response to rider cues. The English riding style is also utilized in show jumping events, where horses are timed as they progress over a collection of obstacles. Polo is another sport that utilises English riding; this sport is extraordinarily demanding on precision timing and coordinated movements from both rider and pony.

The discussion about which pony breeds are way more suited for which riding style does not seem to have any end, I feel it?s a useless discussion. I?m absolutely sure any riding style is suitable for all horse breeds. It depends on the training. Most experts prefer that horses trained for particular disciplines also be trained using just one riding style, and I am in compete agreement with this approach as it helps better focus. A pony schooled in a specific style will be more responsive to cues concerned in that style; contradictory styles would achieve nothing other than confusing the horse.

If you?re seeking to pick what style would work for you, try both out and see which feels more comfortable. Consider your intended disciplines, and do some research to see what would be better for your specific purposes.

Assad sends envoy to Moscow for talks on ending Syria's conflict

The Syrian senior diplomat is expected to discuss the UN mediator's proposals for ending the conflict. Russia, meanwhile, has signaled growing acceptance of President Assad exiting power.

By Erika Solomon,?Reuters / December 26, 2012

Russia's President Vladimir Putin speaks during his annual news conference in Moscow, December 20. Any solution to the conflict in Syria must ensure President Bashar al-Assad's forces and his opponents do not simply swap roles and fight on forever, Putin said on Thursday.

Brahimi, who saw?Assad?on Monday and is planning to hold a series of meetings with Syrian officials and dissidents in?Damascus?this week, is trying to broker a peaceful transfer of power, but has disclosed little about how this might be done.

More than 44,000 Syrians have been killed in a revolt against four decades of?Assad?family rule, a conflict that began with peaceful protests in March last year, but has since descended into civil war.

A video posted by rebels on Wednesday showed the bodies of dozens of soldiers executed by a roadside. At least one of them appeared to have been beaten to death. The?United Nations?and rights group say the military and rebels have both committed war crimes, but have so far placed most of the blame on the?army.

Past peace efforts have floundered, with world powers divided over what has become an increasingly sectarian struggle between mostly Sunni Muslim rebels and?Assad's security forces, drawn primarily from his Shiite-rooted Alawite minority.

Deputy Foreign Minister?Faisal Makdad?flew to?Moscow?to discuss the details of the talks with Brahimi, said a Syrian security source, who would not say if a deal was in the works.

However, a Lebanese official close to?Damascus?said Makdad had been sent to seek Russian advice on a possible agreement.

He said Syrian officials were upbeat after talks with Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League?envoy, who met Foreign Minister?Walid Moualem?on Tuesday a day after his session with?Assad, but who has not outlined his ideas in public.

"There is a new mood now and something good is happening," the official said, asking not to be named. He gave no details.

Russia, which has given?Assad?diplomatic and military aid to help him weather the 21-month-old uprising, has said it is not protecting him, but has fiercely criticized any foreign backing for rebels and, with?China, has blocked U.N. Security Council action on?Syria.

Seeking A Settlement

A?Russian Foreign Ministry?source said Makdad and an aide would meet Foreign Minister?Sergei Lavrov?and Mikhail Bogdanov, the Kremlin's special envoy for?Middle East?affairs, on Thursday, but did not disclose the nature of the talks.

Videogames under fire, Hollywood lays low after school shooting

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The multi-billion-dollar videogame industry came under scrutiny on Wednesday after Hollywood canceled, postponed or played down a slew of movies and TV shows with violent content in the wake of last week's shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

In Washington, Senator John Rockefeller called for a national study of the impact of violent videogames on children and a review of the rating system.

Although investigators in Newtown, Connecticut, have given no motive for Friday's shooting rampage, some U.S. media have reported that the 20-year-old gunman played popular videogame "Call of Duty" - in which players conduct simulated warfare missions - in the basement of his home.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, killed himself at the scene after gunning down 20 young children, six school employees and his mother.

Rockefeller said he had long been concerned about the impact of violent games and videos on children.

"Major corporations, including the video game industry, make billions on marketing and selling violent content to children. They have a responsibility to protect our children," Rockefeller said in a statement.

The Entertainment Software Association, which represents the $78 billion U.S. videogame industry, on Wednesday offered its "heartfelt prayers and condolences" to the Newtown families.

But it said in a statement that "the search for meaningful solutions must consider the broad range of actual factors that may have contributed to this tragedy.

"Any such study needs to include the years of extensive research that has shown no connection between entertainment and real-life violence," the association said.

NEW 'CALL OF DUTY,' 'HALO' GAMES RAKE IN BILLIONS

Activision Blizzard's latest title in its "Call of Duty" franchise - "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" - hit $1 billion in sales two weeks after its launch last month.

Other popular videogames include Microsoft's "Halo 4," in which players kill evil aliens. The game racked up $220 million in global sales on its launch day in November.

Mike Hickey, an analyst at National Alliance Capital Markets, said backlashes against videogames were not rare, but he was unaware of an instance of games being pulled off store shelves in the past.

When the Columbine school shooting happened in 1999, there was a similar outcry because the two perpetrators were students who played the shooter game "Doom," Hickey told Reuters.

Executives at Hollywood movie studios and TV networks have mostly laid low this week as Americans seek answers to the Newtown slaughter, and discuss how to prevent similar gun violence.

However, content seen as sensitive has been pulled from the airwaves, including an episode of the SyFy TV series "Haven" that contained violent scenes in a high school setting, and the premiere next week of a TLC show called "Best Funeral Ever."

Discovery Channel canceled a third season of its reality series "American Guns" about a family of gun makers. Some radio stations stopped playing pop star Ke$ha's bubbly new single "Die Young" to avoid any potential offense.

Glitzy red carpet premieres for violent upcoming new movies "Jack Reacher," starring Tom Cruise, and "Django Unchained" starring Jamie Foxx, were canceled out of respect for the Newtown victims, but both movies will open in theaters as planned in the next seven days.

INSENSITIVE TODAY, OK TOMORROW?

The Parents TV Council praised the response of the entertainment industry this week, but said it shouldn't be confined to the immediate aftermath of such tragedies.

"If a television network changes its programming because of content that could be insensitive today, why would that same content be appropriate at a later time?," council president Tim Winter said in a statement.

"If producers and performers rightly question whether their industry is complicit in creating a violent media culture that feeds real-life tragedies, why would there be a later time to produce and distribute more of it?," Winter added.

Most major Hollywood stars have remained silent about the potential influence of violent movies on U.S. society. But "Django Unchained" star Foxx was quoted as saying the movie industry should not shirk its responsibility.

"We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn't have a sort of influence," Foxx was quoted as saying while promoting the film in New York.

Director Quentin Tarantino called the Newtown shootings "a horrible tragedy," but in an interview with CNN on Monday he declined to link screen violence with real life events.

"This has gone back all the way down to Shakespeare's days ... when there's violence in the street, the cry becomes 'blame the playmaker.' And you know, I actually think that's a very facile argument to pin on something that's a real life tragedy," Tarantino said.

Messi conquers all in AP soccer rankings

LONDON (AP) ? Lionel Messi brushed aside all challengers in the AP Global Soccer rankings this week, although his Barcelona team came close to being topped by new world club champion Corinthians.

Messi, with scored two goals in La Liga last weekend for a staggering 90 this year, received 169 points of a possible 190 from 19 global soccer journalists on The Associated Press panel.

Corinthians goalkeeper Cassio played a key role in the 1-0 defeat of Chelsea in the Club World Cup final in Japan on Sunday. He earned 72 points, two more than Manchester United's Dutch striker Robin van Persie.

"Messi gets two more in the best match in La Liga," panelist Orfeo Suarez of Spain's El Mundo newspaper said. "And Barcelona has 13 points more than Real Madrid."

After being knocked off the top of the rankings last week by Manchester United, Barcelona was back in first place this week, by one point over Corinthians.

"The victory over Chelsea in the final of the Club World Cup returned the trophy to South America after six years," panelist Leonardo Bertozzi of ESPN Brazil said, "rewarding the brilliant work of coach Tite who did it without any world-class players."

Barcelona drew 161 of 190 points and Corinthians was at 160. United was in third place at 103, just ahead of Juventus, which stayed in fourth.

Paris Saint-Germain notched its highest ranking since it began in October, winning 75 points to finish fifth after the impressive 1-0 victory over Lyon that took the Parisian side to the top of Ligue 1. Manchester City came in sixth, ahead of Lazio and AC Milan, giving Italy three teams in the top 10.

Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch put Cassio in the top spot.

"Players who do good things in very important games should get a little extra credit, which is why Cassio's play in the Club World Cup gets top billing this week, ahead of standby Messi, who usually is in the top spot," Timmerman said.

"Corinthians are the first non-European club I've put on my ballot. I feel a little awkward putting the club that's sixth in the Brazilian standings in my top 10, but they beat Chelsea, which counts for something. Paris Saint-Germain jumping over Lyon made the decision easy at the bottom of the top 10."

Paolo Guerrero, who had the only goal in Corinthians' victory in Yokohama, was fourth with 69 points.

Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao scored in a 4-1 loss to Barcelona. He received 59 votes to finish fifth, down from last week's second place.

"Atletico Madrid presented the latest challenge to Barca," Bleacher Report's Will Tidey said. "Tito Vilanova's team swept it aside."

Bayer Leverkusen's Stefan Kiessling had two goals and an assist against Hamburg in a 2-0 victory the Bundesliga. He rose to sixth place, just ahead of fellow German Miroslav Klose of Lazio.

"Stefan Kiessling is gathering attention in Germany," said Christian Schatzle of Derfussballblogger.de.

One of Europe's classiest players, Andrea Pirlo of Juventus, was eighth with 40 points.

Polaroid IM1836 Androidbased mirrorless camera appears on Russian site ahead of CES

It looks like Polaroid's betting big on Android. Judging by a product image and description leaked on a Russian social media site, the company is gearing up to launch an Android-based mirrorless ILC, perhaps as soon as CES. Specs are fairly light, but the compact camera does appear to include an 18-megapixel sensor, a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 10-30mm lens, a pop-up flash, HDMI output and built-in WiFi. As TechRadar points out, the camera looks very similar to the Nikon J1 and J2, and it also features a kit lens with the same zoom range. That's not to suggest that this shooter will share components with its pint-sized counterpart, but we wouldn't rule it out entirely, especially considering that Polaroid doesn't have its own inventory of interchangeable lenses. There's no release schedule suggested, but the timing is curious, especially considering that the company made its first Android announcement at last year's CES. Will your next mirrorless ILC be a Polaroid?

Movie Review: Why Bill Murray's Turn as FDR in Hyde Park on ...

Just when you think you know the direction Hyde Park on Hudson?is heading, a simple drive into the countryside explodes your expectations. The movie,?directed by Roger Michell (Morning Glory,?Notting Hill),?tells of a summer at President Franklin Delano Roosevelt?s upstate New York estate on the eve of World War II, and the president shares a good chunk of that time with his doting cousin Daisy (Laura Linney). I?m not going to spoil that country drive for you, only to say that the giggles and head-scratching that follows speaks much to the boggled tone and near farcical obscurity that defines this bizarre little movie.

Roosevelt is played by Bill Murray, whom I was excited to see in the role, but as it turns out, has little to work with here. As a result he flops about as a grinning cad, holding court in the large study in the estate where he smokes, boozes, and holds receptions with ladies in waiting and heads of state alike. The key moment comes when the king and queen of England pay a visit, hoping to secure American sympathies for the British war effort. The home becomes a setting for a politicking of wits, as the dimwitted King Bertie (Samuel West ? fancy two onscreen portrayals of the stuttering king in just three years) is provoked by the rascal FDR with such seeming offenses as an elaborately-staged hot dog picnic.

This scenario alone could have been fodder for a rather enjoyable film of political high-folly staring Murray as a roguish president lampooning the?ostentation?of the regal world of international policy (would love to have seen Murray handle some lines pulled from Duck Soup). But despite the occasional slapstick ? a falling tray here, blushing queen there ? Hyde Park on Hudson is as bipolar a movie as its portrayal of the president at its center. There is a self-serious undertone, narrated in voice over by Daisy that deals with FDR?s numerous extramarital affairs and these women?s strained but affectionate relationship to the president. Thus we get midnight rendezvous and hot tempered girls storming about the forest, as secret service agents and lovers alike look out for the fragile-hearted president. It closes with a bit of an oration about secrets and lovers, a pining for the days when the press was a boys club that helped keep the philandering of important men a secret and women were free to be the willing members of their harem. As a drama, it all falls flat. As a rumination on sexuality and sexual politics it?s a bit forced and muddled, and, like the king?s frankfurter, hard to swallow.

Branden R. Williams, Business Security Specialist ? Free PCI Book ...

December 14th, 2012 by Branden Williams

OK folks, our PCI Compliance book has been out for a few months now, and Anton & I thought it would be fun to give away second copy with another contest! We have assembled a group of three independent judges who will look at the submissions and pick winners for each competition. The winner will receive a free, signed copy of the book! In fact, it would be one of those rare ?dual-signed? copies with both of our signatures (and the book will have to travel from TX to CA ? or from CA to TX ? for this )

PCI ComplianceSo, on to the second contest (first one).

Our book attempts to draw a middle line between the black & white ?audit? style of looking at PCI DSS and the loosey-goosey ?anything goes? view. We want to take a compliance-friendly and security-friendly, practitioners line. However, sometimes even a compliance guy has to be CREATIVE!

So our second challenge to you, in the comments below, please tell us about your MOST CREATIVE PCI DSS CONTROL you implemented, assessed or witnessed. HOWEVER, it will help your submission if such control was also ACCEPTED by a QSA. We will absolutely reject the creative control submissions that have no chance of making your environment PCI DSS compliant?.

You?ve got about a week (until the end of December 21st), and we will announce the winners after the holidays!

It doesn?t matter if you comment here or on Anton?s blog, we will capture all of them.

Business Travel during the Holidays = OMG #VGPHolidayTravel ...

I can?t even count the number of times during the holidays that I say OMG (either out loud or to myself) while traveling on business. Travel can be no fun on an average day, add holiday travelers to the mix and you never know what you?ll get!

The holiday travel season starts just before Thanksgiving and runs through the New Years week. It?s more than a month of headaches for the business traveler.

After Thanksgiving I flew out to LA for a few days before heading to S.E. Asia. I rented a car from National Car Rental (where I have Executive Elite Status) and can pick any car I want (that?s a cool perk.) I had 2 suitcases and wheeled them to the back of one of the cars. While I was trying to find my GPS and get the suitcases in the car, someone actually got into the car, started the engine and drove off! OMG. I thought maybe it was someone who worked there, but oh, no, it was a guy who drove the car to the front to load in his family. WTF! He stole my car ? well, not ?my? car, but the car I had picked out.

Holiday travel also means hoards of screaming children. I?m leaning towards flying airlines that ban children ? or at least have ?no kids? sections during the holidays. I?d actually pay more to sit away from them. Nothing worse than trying to concentrate on a power point presentation for the next day and listening to a kid scream. Does wonders for the concentration.

So, what?s your experience been with business travel during the holidays? Are you traveling this holiday season for fun or for work? Get the conversation started on Twitter by Tweeting me (@VeryGoodPoints) and using the hashtag #VGPHolidayTravel. I?m looking for the best/worst/craziest travel stories!

Esteban Gutierrez says he has learnt a lot from his mistakes in GP2 ? Formula 1 news

Esteban Gutierrez, who has secured a race seat at Sauber for 2013, has said that he has learnt a lot from his mistakes in GP2 and is looking forward to perform with consistency in Formula 1.

Gutierrez scored two race victories in GP2 in this season, but made few mistakes due to which he could only secure third place finish in the championship and stood behind his main rival, Luiz Razia and the champion, Davide Valsecchi.

However, he has said that he is well aware of the fact that the competition is very tough in F1 and there is no room for errors. Moreover, he expressed that his aim is to perform with consistency for the Swiss team.

?I am totally aware that competition in Formula One is not easy,? he said, ?of course, it is the top level of motorsport. In GP2 it's true that I didn't reach a consistency, but I rate it as the most rewarding season of my career because to have this kind of experience gives you a different perspective for what you input into the future.?

Besides, he said that he is targeting to improve his driving skills in the coming year so as to emerge as a competent driver in the sport. He also said that after achieving consistency, he will go to attain more and more competitive results for his team.

?So I'm going to try and establish that in Formula One and look for consistency in Formula One and then when you reach this consistency you want to look to the top results,? he added.

Additionally, he said that he is eagerly waiting to drive alongside Nico Hulkenberg in the next season.

It will be important to mention that the Hinwil based team has been considered as the toughest midfield rival and is the first team which has passed the mandatory FIA crash tests for the next year.

Furthermore, Sauber are now looking forward to make some essential advancement in their car during the winter testing. Let?s see they perform with their new driver line-up which includes Gutierrez and Hulkenberg in the coming year.?

Light Hum: a pure analog theremin that converts rays into electro-grooves (video)

Light Hum a pure analog 'theramin' instrument that converts light into electrogrooves

Who doesn't love a good theremin spectacle? We Engadgeteers are aficionados of the touchless, variable capacitor musical instrument used in countless '50s space films, so a project by student and designer Danne Woo definitely caught our eye. Woo, who appeared on one of our most popular Engadget shows ever, has built a light-sensing version of that instrument controlled by an AC sequencer. No computers are used in the all-analog device, which is played by moving sliders and dials that vary the intensity of eight lamps installed in front of the musician. The light is converted to varying-frequency sound via photocells, resistors and capacitors which feed a "kleebtronics sequencer" designed by Mark Kleback and Ezer Lichtenstein. To show what it could do, Danne performed a short concert at Glasslands in Brooklyn, bringing the "Good Vibrations" instrument to a whole 'nother place -- catch it in the video after the break.

Alan Alda and kids ask: 'What is time?'

Actor Alan Alda has a question for scientists around the world. He wants to know what time is.

Oh, and he wants the explanation in words an 11-year-old would understand.

Alda, known for his roles on the television show "M*A*S*H" and "The West Wing," has turned his interest toward science communication as a founding member of the Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University in New York. Last year, he challenged scientists to answer the question "What is flame?"

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Ancient copy of Ten Commandments goes digital

Updated 116 minutes ago 12/13/2012 12:53:34 AM +00:00 The Cambridge Digital Library has just made available thousands of pages from fragile religious manuscripts for Internet users' perusal, including a 2,000-year-old copy of the Ten Commandments, known as the "Nash Papyrus."

    2. Solving a 100-year-old scientific hoax
    3. Alan Alda and kids ask: 'What is time?'
    4. First cheesemakers date back 7,500 years

That query was inspired by a question Alda himself asked a teacher as an 11-year-old boy. The answer he received at the time ? "oxidation" ? meant nothing to him, so he launched the Flame Challenge last year to get a better answer. The winner of the contest, University of Innsbruck physics doctoral student Ben Ames, made a song and video to explain the concept.

This year, Alda and the Center for Communicating Science crowdsourced questions from today's 11-year-olds. When they got a number of queries about time, time travel and the beginning of time, they decided to distill the question into a deceptively simply one: What is time ?

"They're asking a very deep question this year (What is Time?!)," Alda wrote on the Center's website. "It's going to be fun to see how scientists around the world answer that one in everyday language."

Scientists are welcomed to send in their responses by March 1, 2013, using video, song, animation or any other tool that might help make sense of the question. The only criteria: The answer must interest and inform 11-year-olds, who will judge the answers and choose the final winner.

In a video on the site, Alda encourages fourth- through sixth-graders to become judges: "The wonderful thing about this contest is the entries are going to be judged by real 11-year-olds. So this is one time when people your age get a chance to tell people their age 'No, good try, but you didn't quite do it,' or 'Great try, and you win the contest.'"

Irving and Cavs deal Lakers another loss, 100-94

CLEVELAND (AP) ? There had to be a low point. The Los Angeles Lakers can only hope they've reached it.

This chaotic season has gotten worse.

Kyrie Irving scored 28 points in his return after missing 11 games with a broken finger, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 100-94 win over Kobe Bryant and the Lakers, who look nothing like a team projected to win an NBA title ? or anything else.

"This is one of the most challenging stretches of my 17 years, and the most baffling, too," a puzzled Bryant said after the Lakers lost for the eighth time in 11 games. "We have the talent and personnel to do it, but we're not, and it's baffling. It's extremely frustrating.

"It doesn't make any sense. We're still finding ways to lose games."

Irving added 11 assists in 39 minutes and showed off his dizzying array of moves as the Cavs, who came in with just four wins, ended a five-game losing streak.

Bryant scored 42 points and Dwight Howard had 19 points and 20 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to stop the Lakers, who were still missing Pau Gasol and Steve Nash, from opening a four-game road trip with a with a loss that could sting for a while.

"We have to stop the bleeding ? somehow," said Howard, who forced a trade this summer from Orlando to join the Lakers and maybe win some championships. "We can't let this kill our spirits too much. This is tough on all of us right now.

"We want to win. We're sick of losing. We all understand that situations like this don't last forever."

C.J. Miles scored 28 in his first start this season, Anderson Varejao had 20 and Alonzo Gee 17 for the Cavs.

Los Angeles fell behind by 16 points in the third quarter, and despite Bryant's valiant attempt to rescue them ? he scored 16 in the fourth quarter ? the Lakers dropped to 1-10 in games the superstar scores 30 or more points.

"We played very uninspired basketball, offensively and defensively," said coach Mike D'Antoni, brought in to repair an underachieving squad after Mike Brown was fired five games into the season. "We play at a very slow pace and we struggle. Maybe it shifts over to defense. Maybe we're slow. Maybe we can't do it. . It's my job to fix it ? and that's what I'll do."

As the final seconds ticked off, Bryant stood at halfcourt, his right hand resting on his hip, a look of disgust on his face. When the horn sounded, he handed the ball to an official and shared a brief hug with Irving and a long one with Cavs coach Byron Scott, who whispered something in his ear.

The Lakers have nowhere to go but up.

Bryant refused to single out any teammates, and he chose his words carefully when pressed on his team's many problems.

"I'm very upset," Bryant said. "When things get hard, you should get more determined, not shake your heads. It just seems when it rains it pours. It's like this cloud is following us around at all times. I'm one of the fastest guys on the team ? and I'm like 50. What does that tell you?"

Before the game, D'Antoni bemoaned his team's defense and said the Lakers seemed to be missing a "spirit" to win.

Those aren't their only deficiencies.

Howard scored inside to get the Lakers within 86-82, but Irving answered with a 3-pointer. Metta World Peace hit a 3 to bring Los Angeles within 89-85, but on Cleveland's next possession, the Lakers lost track of Cavs center Anderson Varejao, who scored an uncontested layup as all five Los Angeles players watched.

Bryant hit a 3-pointer to trim Cleveland's lead to 95-92 with 28 seconds left, but he missed another 3-point attempt on the Lakers' next trip and there was nothing he or anyone else in purple and gold could do from there.

Howard is confident the Lakers will be able to turn their season around.

He just doesn't know when.

"We've got to stay focused and stay strong," he said. "We can't let this break who we are as a team. We talk about it every day. People are going to say whatever they want about our team right now. We're not playing the greatest basketball. But there will come a day when we'll have the gun. Right now, we're rabbits. Once we get the gun, it's not going to be fun for everybody else."

The Cavs went 2-9 without Irving, their sensational 20-year-old. But with him on the floor, Cleveland is a far different team and on this night better than the Lakers.

Cleveland was ahead by 12 when Irving tried to take Bryant on by himself.

Dribbling the ball between his legs at the top of the key, Cleveland's star backed Bryant down in the lane as the crowd roared at a 1-on-1 matchup Irving proposed during the summer for charity. Irving tried a pump fake that didn't work and Bryant easily blocked his shot as if to say, "Not yet, kid."

"It reminded me when Allen Iverson was going against Michael Jordan," Irving said. "The whole crowd sat up. I got my shot blocked, but it was still a memorable moment for me, seeing the crowd reaction. I was surprised by it."

Scott wasn't shocked that Irving would play so well.

"He's likes being put in the position of having to deliver," Scott said. "He's just a special young man. He loves the competition."

NOTES: Bryant didn't know if Irving was "confident or crazy" when Irving challenged him to a 1-on-1 game during U.S. Olympic team practices. Irving didn't back down when Bryant unleashed some heavy trash talk on the 20-year-old. "I'm the best trash talker alive," Bryant said. "He tried to keep up. Hopefully, you'll see a little more of that (trash talk) from that generation, guys competing against each other. It was like that when I came into the league with Charles (Barkley) and Michael (Jordan) and (John) Stockton and (Clyde) Drexler and all those guys. That's how it was." ... Cavs G Daniel Gibson hyperextended his right elbow in the first half and didn't return. He expects to play Wednesday at Indiana.

Conservatives can be persuaded to care more about environmental issues when couched in terms of fending off threats to 'purity'

Dec. 10, 2012 ? When it comes to climate change, deforestation and toxic waste, the assumption has been that conservative views on these topics are intractable. But new research from the University of California, Berkeley, suggests that such viewpoints can be changed after all, when the messages about the need to be better stewards of the land are couched in terms of fending off threats to the "purity" and "sanctity" of Earth and our bodies.

A UC Berkeley study has found that while people who identified themselves as conservatives tend to be less concerned about the environment than their liberal counterparts, their motivation increased significantly when they read articles that stressed the need to "protect the purity of the environment" and were shown such repellant images as a person drinking dirty water, a forest filled with garbage, and a city under a cloud of smog.

Published Dec. 10 in the online issue of the journal Psychological Science, the findings indicate that reframing pro-environmental rhetoric according to values that resonate strongly with conservatives can reduce partisan polarization on ecological matters.

"These findings offer the prospect of pro-environmental persuasion across party lines," said Robb Willer, a UC Berkeley social psychologist and coauthor of the study. "Reaching out to conservatives in a respectful and persuasive way is critical, because large numbers of Americans will need to support significant environment reforms if we are going to deal effectively with climate change, in particular."

Researchers conducted a content analysis of more than 200 op-eds published in such newspapers as The New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal, and found the pro-environmental arguments were most often pitched in terms of moral obligations to care about the natural environment and protect it from harm, a theme that resonates more powerfully with liberals, they added, than with conservatives.

They hypothesized that conservatives would be more responsive to environmental arguments focused on such principles as purity, patriotism and reverence for a higher authority. In their study, the authors specifically tested the effectiveness of arguments for protecting the purity of the environment. They said the results suggest they were on the right track:

"When individuals view protecting the environment as a moral issue, they are more likely to recycle and support government legislation to curb carbon emissions," said Matthew Feinberg, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at Stanford University and lead author of the study which he conducted while at UC Berkeley.

Scientific consensus on the existence of warming global land and ocean temperatures -- attributed in large part to human activities that produce greenhouse gas emissions -- continues to grow and influence public opinion, especially with such extreme weather events as Hurricane Sandy. A recent Rasmussen poll reported that 68 percent of Americans view climate change as a "serious problem," compared to a 2010 Gallup poll in which 48 percent of Americans said they thought global warming was exaggerated.

In the first experiment, 187 men and women recruited via several U.S. Craigslist websites rated their political ideology on a scale of "extremely liberal" to "extremely conservative." They then rated the morality of such activities as recycling a water bottle versus throwing it in the garbage. The results of that experiment, and a similar one conducted on 476 college undergraduates, showed that liberals are more prone to viewing sustainability as a moral issue than are conservatives.

Next, researchers conducted a content analysis of pro-environmental videos on YouTube and more than 200 op-eds in national newspapers, sorting them under the themes of "harm/care," which they expected to resonate more with liberals, and "purity/sanctity," which they predicted would appeal more to conservatives. They found that most pro-environmental messages leaned strongly toward liberal moral concerns.

In the last experiment, 308 men and women, again recruited via Craigslist, were randomly assigned to read one of three articles. The harm/care-themed article described the destruction wreaked on the environment by humans and pitched protection of the environment as a moral obligation. Images accompanying the text were of a forest with tree stumps, a barren coral reef and drought-cracked land, which are more typical of the visuals promoted by pro-environmental groups.

The purity/sanctity-themed article stressed how pollution has contaminated Earth and people's bodies, and argued for cleaning up and purifying the environment. To enhance those themes and elicit disgust, the accompanying images showed a person drinking filthy water, a city under a cloud of pollution and a forest full of garbage. The neutral article talked about the history of neckties.

Participants were then asked to rate how strongly they felt certain emotions, including disgust, in response to what they'd read. Next, they reported how strongly they agreed or disagreed with such statements as "It is important to protect the environment," "I would support government legislation aimed at protecting the environment" and 'I believe humans are causing global warming."

Overall, the study found that the purity-themed message inspired conservatives to feel higher levels of disgust, which in turn increased their support for protecting the environment.
