Malian civilians form militia to combat Islamists

Some barefoot, others wearing plastic shoes, a ragtag group of Malians shout "one, two, three!" as they throw up their knees high during a military drill.

The motley crew of would-be fighters is made up of students, young jobless men and displaced civil servants who fled Mali's north when Islamic extremists occupied the desert area five months ago.

Now these men hope to return -- fighting-fit and steeled for battle -- to liberate the region they call home, which is in the grip of the jihadists who have enforced strict sharia law.

At the makeshift military camp in the small town of Soufouroulaye, near Mopti in central Mali, there are 285 militia volunteers in all joining in the drills, about 30 of them teenagers.

"I am a young volunteer," says one of them, Oumar Toure. "I can't see a part of my country under control of criminals and not go and fight."

Mopti is the last big town en route to the north, an area larger than France or Texas that was seized by armed Islamist groups allied with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb in March and April.

The extremists piggy-backed on a Tuareg separatist rebellion which started in January, fuelled by former mercenaries from Libya.

Together, the militants overwhelmed Mali's poorly-equipped army, which then launched a coup in the southern capital Bamako that only heightened the chaos and sped up the rebel advance.

The Islamists soon pushed out their erstwhile Tuareg allies and have since enforced strict Islamic law while sparking regional and international fears of a new centre for radicalism in Africa.

While Mali's embattled interim authorities have made little progress in wresting back the lost territory, several 'self-defence' militias have sprung up to win back the lost ground.

The group in Soufouroulaye includes sympathisers and members of Ganda Iso (Sons of the Land), a militia, historically backed by the army, that is known for its deadly attacks against lighter-skinned Tuareg or Arab Malians.

While the Malian state does not recognise these militias, the training is being carried out by regular soldiers.

"We call this camp the military base. I am the general inspector," says Oumar Maiga, a soldier helping get the fighters into shape.

He says the boot camp has several phases: "Moral training so that the youth are toughened up, physical training, and military training with tactical exercises and shooting," he tells AFP.

The volunteers also learn to shoot Kalashnikov assault rifles.

One of them, a left-handed youth, pulls the trigger, but nothing happens. The gun has not been loaded. "If you were in front of the enemy, you would be dead," his instructor reprimands him.

In between training sessions, the youths gather in a hangar near the large field where they receive their instruction. Here women prepare them a lunch of rice and sauce in large pots.

"It is our contribution to the war," says Awa Samake, one of the cooks. "We must help and encourage these youths, who are the pride of our country.

"Here sympathisers give a bit of food to these youths, others a bit of money. We are helping too."

Security sources report similar groups training in other parts of Mopti and in the the southeast of the capital.

While not officially recognised, the groups appear to be tolerated by authorities.

"They aren't military troops, but currently all who want to defend the country are welcome," a military source said on condition of anonymity, adding that they could supplement Malian forces if need be.

Five months after the occupation, it is not clear when or if any military intervention will take place, with some hoping talks can resolve the crisis.

The option of an intervention from a 3,300-strong standby force of the Economic Community of West African States has been on the table for months, but "very little" has been done to implement this, Mali's Defence Minister Yamoussa Camara admitted recently.

The UN has asked for more information on the size, means and plans of the proposed force before granting it a mandate.

Mali's army chief of staff Ibrahima Dembele has said the national army -- which is sorely in need of training and equipment -- will play the lead role in ejecting the jihadists.

In Kona, also in the Mopti region, over 120 soldiers have recently been deployed to "reinforce the frontline", say corroborating security sources.

Two Mi-24 combat helicopters have been acquired and tanks and other material are on their way to landlocked Mali after being blocked in Guinea. A new operational military post has also been set up in Sevare outside Mopti.

Several of the fiercely proud soldiers, still smarting from their rout in the north, have told AFP they want to be at the vanguard of the reconquest of their land as a matter of "national pride".

Court mistakenly posts secret pipeline settlement

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) ? Pacific Gas & Electric Co. agreed to pay more than $2 million to a teenager burned in the 2010 San Bruno gas pipeline explosion that killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes, according to secret settlement documents mistakenly posted by a California court.

The documents provide the first glimpse at settlements reached by the utility in lawsuits filed by victims of the blast. Details of settlements reached with more than a quarter of the roughly 400 plaintiffs have previously been confidential, the San Mateo County Times reported on Wednesday (http://bit.ly/PsDRDm).

The documents posted on the San Mateo County Superior Court website show the company paid the teenage girl $1.8 million and an additional $677,700 to cover her attorneys' fees and $19,400 for medical expenses. The girl suffered second and third-degree burns in the blast that was blamed on an inferior pipeline weld. Her injuries required extensive treatment and will likely leave her with permanent scars, the lawsuit states.

The documents, sealed by court order, were filed on July 18. It was not immediately clear how they got online.

"From the clerk's office to the IT department, something happened," said Judge Steven Dylina, who is presiding over the girl's case. "I don't know where the glitch is."

The page on the court's website connected to the San Bruno blast was briefly shut down but was back up on Thursday.

PG&E would not say if the disclosure would impact other civil cases. Some victims have complained that lack of information about other settlement amounts has made it difficult for them to evaluate offers from the utility.

"The contents of any settlement remain confidential but we stay committed in our efforts to resolve these matters as quickly and fairly as possible," PG&E spokeswoman Brittany Chord said Thursday.

Through June, the utility had spent $145 million on injury and property claims connected with the blast, Chord said. The company estimated at the time that third-party claims from the blast would end up costing $455 million.

A confidential report commissioned by state utility regulators found PG&E's parent corporation could absorb $2.55 billion in penalties tied to the explosion, yet remain financially viable.

The report by Overland Consulting did not state outright that PG&E Corp. would be fined that much for the deadly blast but instead suggested the company could survive a fine of that magnitude, according to a report by The San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/SVGuTp).

That is considerably more than PG&E has said it expects to pay out for violations that California Public Utilities Commission staff allege the utility committed before the transmission line burst on Sept. 9, 2010, sparking a gas-fueled inferno that devoured several blocks.

"The company disagrees with the report's conclusion and we believe it's based on an unrealistic and flawed analysis," Chord said Thursday.

PG&E crews were back in the suburban neighborhood on Thursday, filling in a portion of the ruptured pipeline with cement to seal it off for the future, Chord said.

I saw your nanny: From Bad to Better - Glenn Lewis678's blog

PERSPECTIVE
From Bad to Better, and it only took 2 years! I have been a nanny off and on for the last 5 years. I took my first nanny job during my second semester of college. I had been babysitting since the age of 13, and at this point, I had taken 3 Child Development classes as well as volunteered at a local Day Care Center. I used Care.com and Sittercity.com to find a nanny job. I had posted my profile with background and driving checks on file. I had received numerous responses and answers to all of the jobs that I had applied to, and thought things were going great. I narrowed the replies down to 3 families that I thought were offering the perfect gigs.

Family 1: A work at home mom and a dad who worked outside of the home about 60-70 hours a week. They had one 8 month old son. They needed someone to come Monday-Thursday from 8:30am-5:30pm. They were offering $11 an hour with 4 paid sick days a year, and 2 weeks paid vacation a year (one week of my choice, and one week of theirs). They lived in a safe neighborhood within walking distance to a local library, local Park, Gymboree, Toddler Play Center, and a Children?s Museum. Family 2: Mom and Dad both worked outside of the home. They had one 4 and a half month old daughter. They needed someone Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. They were offering $12 an hour, no paid sick days, one week paid vacation. They lived in the same neighborhood as I, probably only 5 miles away from me. They were offering to buy the nanny a membership to the local Zoo, the local Gymboree, and the local YMCA. Family 3: Mom worked outside of the home while dad worked in a home office and traveled about 15 days of every month. They had a 6 month old daughter. They needed someone Tuesday-Saturday from 7am-4pm. They were offering $11 an hour, 3 weeks paid sick days/vacation days a year, and lived in the same neighborhood as Family #1.

I chose to work with Family 3, mainly because I felt as though I had really connected with not only the parents, but also the baby. They were offering what I was asking, and the schedule seemed to really work for me. I started the job, and everything went great?for about the first month. At the beginning of month two, dad began traveling more, and mom?s job was becoming more demanding. They asked if I?d be interested in becoming a live in, and I agreed upon the agreement of an increase in pay. I moved in the following week, and my pay had increased to $14 an hour. Mom started working 12 hour days, and we saw dad about a week every month. I became very connected to the child, and it was almost as though I was a parent to this baby as her actual parents were rarely around. It wasn?t long until I was responsible for this baby during every moment she was awake. Weekends and weekdays started to blend, and I was feeling trapped. I dropped all of my classes that semester, and it got to the point where I was never away from the baby. About 11 months into the job, it had become too much. I needed space, I needed me time, I just needed to get out.

After a week of finding the time, I was finally able to sit down with the mother and father. I expressed my concerns, and they had told me they agreed. They also chose this time to tell me that they were expecting their second child. (How they found the time, I will never know!) They told me that they felt as though I wasn?t a good match for their family. I was shocked, devastated, angry. I wasn?t a match for their child? I was with her every second of every day. I loved her as though she was my own. I couldn?t imagine not seeing her everyday. While I was the one to start the conversation, I didn?t expect to take such a shocking turn. They let me know that they would only need me for one more week. MB?s parents had decided to move in with them and help raise their grandchildren. Parents and I had agreed that I would still be able to see the little girl, and I accepted it. I worked the following week, and received my final paycheck. I wasn?t given a thank you for time/services, I wasn?t given any sort of bonus, I wasn?t even told goodbye by the parents.

I tried to contact the family numerous times that following month, and still to this day have never heard back from them. I felt like I had lost a part of me. I miss that little girl so much, still to this day. Since I left that job, I have been working as an Infant/Toddler Class instructor at many local Recreation Centers. I taught classes such as Baby Sign, Music and Movement, Baby Yoga, Focus and Flexibility, Mommy and Me, Ballerina Babies, and a few others. I did this job for about a year, before I decided to go back to school. Upon reaching the decision to go back to school, I decided to go back to a career as a Nanny. I began the strenuous search for a job, interviewed with many families. This time around, I made my requests very clear, demanded the use of a contract, searched more for a family who practiced parenting styles similar to mine.

After 3 months of searching, I finally found the job that worked for me. I now work for a family with a 6 month old baby girl. The parents both work outside of the home. We have a mutual trusting relationship. We have a respect for each other and are working together every day to raise this amazing baby. I have no complaints over my new job. I have been here for 3 months now, and have not had a bad moment in this job. They have accepted me into their family. I work M-F 7am-3:30pm. I am invited to their weekly family game night. I occasionally babysit for them outside of my scheduled work hours. I get a month off every three months paid. After 2 years, I have found my happiness. - Anonymous

Jeb Bush to Romney: Connect emotionally to voters

(AP) ? Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is urging Republican Mitt Romney to connect to people emotionally if he hopes to persuade voters to support him.

Bush spoke on ABC's "Good Morning America" in advance of Romney's address to the Republican National Convention Thursday night.

He notes that Romney will have to show more of himself. Bush says that will be hard for Romney because he's not suddenly going to come across in a "new age kind of way."

Bush also stresses that Republicans shouldn't do anything "stupid." He says the party must acknowledge the nation's increasing diversity when addressing issues of immigration and creating a climate of economic growth.

He says that if the political parties ignore demographics, "you do it at your peril."

Arrested Russian killer denies ties to Pussy Riot

FILE - In this Friday, Aug. 17, 2012 file photo, feminist punk group Pussy Riot members, from left, Maria Alekhina, Yekaterina Samutsevich, and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova show the court's verdict as they sit in a glass cage at a courtroom in Moscow. The two-year prison sentence handed down to Pussy Riot for a provocative protest inside a Moscow cathedral called attention to just how hard President Vladimir Putin is clamping down on minor displays of dissent. But Russia isn?t the only country where people are punished for offenses that many in the West might consider trivial. (AP Photo/Mikhail Metzel, File)

(AP) ? Investigators say police have detained a man who has confessed to killing two women in a central Russian city, and then tried to mislead investigations by scrawling a message at the murder scene demanding freedom for jailed members of the Pussy Riot band.

The man ? a 38-year-old university professor named Igor Danilevsky ? was detained Thursday in Kazan, Russia's Investigative Committee said on Friday. It said Danilevsky wrote "Free Pussy Riot" on a wall in the victims' blood because he wanted the deaths of the 38-year-old woman he dated and her mother, 76, to appear as if they were a "ritual killing."

The Committee said Danilevsky had convinced the woman to take out a loan to repay his debts, and promised to marry her. Police had found the knife used to stab the women to death and disfigure their faces and bodies, it said.

Three members of the band were sentenced to two years in prison earlier this month for a February "punk prayer" in Moscow's main cathedral entreating the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Vladimir Putin, who at the time was on the verge of winning a third term as Russian president.

The trial, widely seen as Kremlin-orchestrated, caused an international furor, with celebrities such as Paul McCartney urging Russian authorities to free the band.

The jailed band members' attorney had called the two women's murder "either a horrendous provocation or a psychopathic" case.

Kremlin-friendly media and the Orthodox Church clerics had seized upon the alleged link between the murder and the band to lambast the artists and their supporters, and compared them to mass murderer Charles Manson, who also used the blood of his victims to write on the walls of their houses.

Some Russian publications ran headlines claiming Pussy Riot supporters "committed" or "inspired" the double homicide. The coverage was full of the mostly negative terms used by Kremlin-friendly television networks and media in their coverage of the protesters' trial.

The Orthodox Church has called the band's stunt sacrilegious, but hundreds of artists, musicians and other intellectuals have signed petitions urging authorities to free them.

Funeral for Moors murder victim's mother

The mother of a child victim of the Moors murderers was buried in Manchester on Thursday after she died without fulfilling her dearest wish of finding out where her son's body was hidden.

Friends and family of Winnie Johnson, whose son Keith Bennett was killed aged 12 in 1964, said goodbye in a service at the Manchester church where Keith attended Sunday school before his death.

Johnson died of cancer on August 18, aged 78, after almost five decades of campaigning and searching for Keith's resting place on Saddleworth Moor.

Her son was abducted and killed by Moors murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, who later confessed to the crime but never told her where on the moor they had hidden his body.

Canon Ian Gomersall, rector of St Chrysostom's church, told mourners he would not name at her funeral "the perpetrators of that evil".

"What I will do is pay tribute to this remarkable woman. I know my words of tribute will be shared by so many people," he said.

"I pay tribute to Winnie's courage and determination to bring her son back to her family. I pay tribute to Winnie and her family's resolve to give Keith a final resting place, which has been an inspiration to so many over the years, and we thank God for this encouraging example."

Family, friends and fellow members of Johnson's much-loved bingo club heard tributes to the former cleaner and hospital kitchen worker who was also mother to four other children.

Hindley died in prison in 2002 but Brady, 74, is still alive, despite being tube-fed for the past twelve years as he has been refusing food. He is fighting to be transferred to prison from a secure hospital and allowed to die.

Police revealed just a day before Johnson's death that they were investigating the possibility Brady had revealed Keith's burial place in a sealed letter handed to his mental health advocate.

But Johnson was too ill to be told, and died without knowing of the fresh investigation.

Between 1963 and 1965, Brady and Hindley lured five children and teenagers to their deaths, burying four of them on remote moorland near Manchester. All of the bodies apart from Keith's were found.

GLAAD: CW first, CBS last in LGBT programming

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - There's good and bad news for CBS in GLAAD's latest network responsibility index, which tracks portrayals of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in primetime.

The CW, which CBS co-owns with Warner Bros., was again ranked number one in the quantity, quality and diversity of images of LGBT people on primetime broadcast TV. But CBS, the most-watched network, ranked last and received a "failing" rating.

The CW received a "good" rating, and 29 percent of its primetime programming hours were found to be LGBT-inclusive.

The CW also registered the most racial diversity, with 62 percent of impressions made by LGBT people/characters of color.

"With the addition of drama 'The L.A. Complex,' The CW is... one of the few networks on broadcast or cable to feature black LGBT characters in lead or supporting roles," GLAAD said.

The CW was also rated first in LGBT inclusion last year. It is the least-watched broadcast network.

ABC, home to "Modern Family," was ranked second in the study, with GLAAD finding 27 percent of its primetime hours to be LGBT-inclusive. It bumped Fox, ranked second last year, to third this year, with 24 percent. ABC's "Modern Family" broke ground in primetime by prominently featuring a gay couple, Mitchell and Cameron, with an adopted child. Fox's "Glee" features prominent gay characters and has addressed issues including homophobia and bullying.

NBC remained in fourth with 19 percent. The network's new season includes "The New Normal," a show about a gay couple adopting a child.

GLAAD said only 8 percent of CBS's primetime hours were LGBT inclusive. The network fell from an "adequate" score last year to a "failing" one. This season, the network's shows include "Partners," about gay and heterosexual best friends and business partners.

"At CBS our commitment to diversity is unwavering," the network said in a statement. "We are proud of our initiatives across the Network designed to increase diverse representation in every part of our business. We value our ongoing dialogue with GLAAD and we will continue to work with them closely."

Among cable networks, Showtime (46 percent inclusive), ABC Family and TNT (both 34 percent) and HBO (33 percent) all received "good" ratings. MTV (23 percent), which received an "excellent" score two years ago, received an "adequate" this year, as did FX, TLC, and USA. GLAAD highlighted ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars" as that network's "strongest series in terms of LGBT representation and diversity."

TBS received a "failing" rating for the fourth year in a row. History was also found to be "failing."

"Americans expect to see their off-screen worlds represented onscreen and today more than ever that includes LGBT people and families," said GLAAD president Herndon Graddick. "Storylines of families like Mitchell and Cameron on 'Modern Family' and young people like Emily on 'Pretty Little Liars' are not only growing acceptance of our community, but have found praise from viewers and critics alike at a time when visibility and acceptance of LGBT people is at an all-time high."

ZTE team up with Intel and announce the ZTE Grand X IN

Android Central

It only seems five minutes ago we had the ZTE Grand X released and already it is being superseded by another flagship device. The ZTE Grand X IN is powered by an Intel® Atom™ processor Z2460 with Intel® Hyper-Threading which should make the new handset more efficient in the power department whilst still delivering a fast and powerful experience. The majority of the specs look to be on-par with the original Grand X although the camera has had a boost and we now get an 8MP instead of the 5. The shell looks identical and from handling the Grand X I can say it is a pretty solid device for its price point.

Other features include a 4.3 inch TFT 16 million-color display, a 1650 mAh battery and HSPA+ 21Mbps. The device is planned for release in Europe during September and will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. There is no word on plans to get Jelly Bean on it so I wouldn't hold your breath for that one however when carriers announce pricing for the ZTE Grand X IN I expect them to be very competitive. The Grand X that launched here in the UK just last month is sitting just short of the £200 mark on pay as you go so fingers crossed the final figure for the IN will be in that ball park.

Catch the press release and full specs below:

Web Design - Boost Up Your Internet Business | Web Design Idea

A website can make or break your business. The way you design and maintain your website can determine the success of your online business to a great extent. There are so many elements in a website, which when changed, can completely change the visibility of your website. When you launch your own website, you must make sure it ranks on the first page of popular search engines. Well, let us face it; for most people, if it is not on the first page, it does not exist. So, you need to keep a few tricks up your sleeve to improve your website traffic. Pay utmost attention to web design.

You should have the money required to invest in a new website design. If you do not have sufficient fund try working with free web design software's. Having a little bit of knowledge about HTML is important if you are designing your own website. This also gives you the control of the content of your site. Do not compromise on the customer privacy while designing a website. Your customers must be assured that the site they are visiting is 100% safe. Check with your web hosting company about the security features it provides.

If all of these seem like too much of work, turn to a professional web design company. You will be provided with a lot of webpage design options before you can choose the style and layout of your website. But, picking the right designer or company is important. The company should have some experience in the field. Setting up a site is not a very easy job; especially if it is a large company. Simply put, the web design firm you choose should be done keeping in mind the kind of website you want.

Shortlist some of the best professional website design firms. You need to pay a lot of attention to the reputation a certain firm holds. Consumer reports will be available online. There will be client comments and also details about the services provided. On the website of the design firm you will get details on their past jobs and other related information. This will help you make up your mind about which company to hire to design your website.

When you brief your web design requirements to the designer, make sure you have certain things in mind. The product and the market you are targeting should be considered. The website should appeal to the target audience. Clients should find it extremely easy to navigate your website. The client should not be confused about where or how to get your product. They should easily be able to reach the page of their choice. Add past client testimonials on your website. And do not forget to add a "contact us" page. That adds credibility to your business and separates your website from hundreds of hoax websites. Once your website is designed, make sure you make the most out of it. Last but not the least; make sure you deliver what you promise.

(AP) ? Hurricane Isaac has gotten a little stronger as it closes in on the Gulf Coast.

Isaac's maximum sustained winds increased Tuesday afternoon to 80 mph.

The storm is expected to make landfall late Tuesday on the eve of the seventh anniversary of when Hurricane Katrina devastated the region.

While not as powerful as Katrina, Isaac threatens to flood the coasts of four states with storm surge and heavy rains on its way to New Orleans, where residents have been hunkering down behind levees fortified after Katrina struck.

Frankenstein programmers test a cybersecurity monster

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? In order to catch a thief, you have to think like one.

UT Dallas computer scientists are trying to stay one step ahead of cyber attackers by creating their own monster. Their monster can cloak itself as it steals and reconfigures information in a computer program.

In part because of the potentially destructive nature of their technology, creators have named this software system Frankenstein, after the monster-creating scientist in author Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus.

"Shelley's story is an example of a horror that can result from science, and similarly, we intend our creation as a warning that we need better detections for these types of intrusions," said Dr. Kevin Hamlen, associate professor of computer science at UT Dallas who created the software, along with his doctoral student Vishwath Mohan. "Criminals may already know how to create this kind of software, so we examined the science behind the danger this represents, in hopes of creating counter measures."

Frankenstein is not a computer virus, which is a program that can multiply and take over other machines. But, it could be used in cyber warfare to provide cover for a virus or another type of malware, or malicious software.

In order to avoid antivirus software, malware typically mutates every time it copies itself onto another machine. Antivirus software figures out the pattern of change and continues to scan for sequences of code that are known to be suspicious.

Frankenstein evades this scanning mechanism. It takes code from programs already on a computer and repurposes it, stringing it together to accomplish the malware's malicious task with new instructions.

"We wanted to build something that learns as it propagates," Hamlen said. "Frankenstein takes from what is already there and reinvents itself."

"Just as Shelley's monster was stitched from body parts, our Frankenstein also stitches software from original program parts, so no red flags are raised," he said. "It looks completely different, but its code is consistent with something normal."

Hamlen said Frankenstein could be used to aid government counter terrorism efforts by providing cover for infiltration of terrorist computer networks. Hamlen is part of the Cyber Security Research and Education Center in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.

The UT Dallas research is the first published example describing this type of stealth technology, Hamlen said.

"As a proof-of-concept, we tested Frankenstein on some simple algorithms that are completely benign," Hamlen said. "We did not create damage to anyone's systems."

The next step, Hamlen said, is to create more complex versions of the software.

Frankenstein was described in a paper published online (https://www.usenix.org/conference/woot12/frankenstein-stitching-malware-benign-binaries) in conjunction with a presentation at a recent USENIX Workshop on Offensive Technologies.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Review ? Richard III: The War of the Roses from Columbia Games ...

Review ? Richard III: The War of the Roses from Columbia Games

Designers ? Tom Dalgliesh and Jerry Taylor

Art ? Tom Dalgleish, Mark Mahaffey and Leona Preston

Thanks to Columbia Games for kindly providing a review copy of this game

I?ve been clearing the decks and making time for war gaming lately and I have to say that Columbia Games has moved firmly onto my radar as their games seem to meet my ?limited schedule and ease of play/learning? criteria. Living in the UK, hence the name of this blog, I thought it would be very interesting to try out Richard III: The War of the Roses as I?m interested in British history and also had played Avalon Hill?s Kingmaker back in the day.

A 2- player game for age 12+, this is a ?Block War Game?.

From BGG ? Richard III: The Wars of the Roses (formerly known simply as Wars of the Roses) is an epic two-player game concerning the long and bloody dynastic struggle between the houses of Lancaster and York for the throne of England. The game depicts both the vicious military campaigns and the rich political struggles that surrounded the late rule of the mad-king Henry VI, the Yorkist usurper Edward IV, the bloody rule of Richard III, and the early years of the first Tudor king, Henry VII. Also strutting across the game?s stage and toward the throne is Richard of York, the patriarch of the house of Plantagenet; Richard Neville, the notorious ?Kingmaker?; the iron-queen of Lancaster, Margaret of Anjou, and the would-be Lancastrian king Edward, the Prince of Wales.

Unboxing

First and foremost, the artwork is rather choice. The cover has, I assume, a period image of Richard III and is quite eye-catching. The map, which comes on cardstock, is absolutely stunning and I would say its suitable for framing. Have a look -

The geographic areas are clear and have plenty of room for your Blocks. Its nice to see the extra detail of the actual locations of historical battles noted.

You get 63 wooden blocks, Red for Lancastrian and White for Yorkist forces plus 1 Black for Rebels, and the Block information stickers (which you have to put on the blocks) look very nice with shields and functional with nice icons and unit strengths, Title and Family name, Loyalty rating, Combat rating. There is a lot there but its easy enough to read.

You also get 25 cards which provide Action points and Events. They are nicely laid out. I recommend sleeving them as the cards are the engine of the game and will get a lot of use.

?

Gameplay

The object if the game is to? eliminate all 5 enemy heirs to the throne for an instant victory or to have one of your Heirs in place as King after the third campaign and end of the Usurpation phase of the Political turn.

I found the rules pretty clear and easy to digest although there were a couple of bits that could have been slightly clearer. There are useful written examples of play which are very helpful. The Game Turns are as follows:

There are 3 Campaigns in the game, each divided into 7 game turns with a Political turn linking each campaign. Each turn has three phases.

Card phase -? Each player starts with 7 cards, one for each turn. Each player starts each game turn by playing 1 card face down. These cards are turned over and the player? with the higher card value is Player 1 that turn. If a player plays an Event card they go first. If there is a tie, the player with the Pretender to the throne is first.

Then you must play the card, most of which have differing action points (used for movement of on-board units and Recruitment off-board units). There are Event cards available as well which allow special actions. Interesting stuff as you need to carefully consider which cards to play and hope to outwit your opponent in your card play to take best advantage.

Command phase ? Player 1 uses allocated action points to move units and/or recruit more units then player 2 does the same. There are rules for Group moves, geographic boundaries, sea movement, etc.? All pretty easy. The challenge in this game is not in the rules, it is in your choices with limited action points.

Battle phase -

Battles are fought between blocks in the same city area. They are only revealed at the moment of combat. require a number of considerations -

Battle sequence ? Player 1 determines the order in which battles are fought

Battle turns ? Each player has 3 choices in a battle ? Fire, Retreat (except in the first round of combat), and Pass. The sequence of turns depends on the combat rating of the blocks beginning with ?A? units and having combat firing first, and and so on. Defending blocks fire before attacking blocks. A block has a limit of 1-4 dice you roll as its attack.

The use of blocks with multiple strengths is a very nice and effective mechanism and very clean and efficient. The strongest Block in the Battles takes all the hits from 1 attack and this means you could lose Heirs quickly if you aren?t careful. The target block loses strength from combat hits and you just turn the block to the relevant side revealing its new strength value.

Battle reserves ? these can be declared and added to a battle

Other rules cover disruption, Battle hits, eliminated blocks, retreats and regrouping.

At the end of each Campaign, when all cards are played, there is a Political turn where Levies disband, Usurpation takes place, Pretender goes home, and the King goes home.

Then the Campaign is reset unless its the end of the 3rd Campaign in which you check to see who?s won.

The process works very well and is easily understood, particularly for experienced war gamers. I had to review a few sections for clarity but it was fine. The first campaign will see you getting more familiar with each turn.

New gamers will take longer to learn the game but overall this is a very comfortable game to get into. Columbia uses a core system and makes adjustments to reflect the historical period and conflict in their games and I?m glad they do as it makes it less of a chore to get into their games.

This is a clean, effective and elegant system. All very playable in about 2 hours.

Did it work for me?

Richard III: The War of the Roses works really well. It is a visual fest and although relatively simple, is rather chess-like in that your decisions as to movement to consolidate your forces to bring battle is so key. The Yorkist player starts with a heck of a dilemma as his forces need to invade, but where? And then you need to get sufficient forces into Britain to stand a chance. The Lancastrian player is spread all over Britain and will struggle to collect his forces. Fantastic, tense, frustrating. Yes, combat is subject to die rolls and this can be frustrating if the dice go against you. I like the luck and uncertainty of using dice. As had been said, luck plays an important part in warfare.

Also the Battles are brutal as you decide how long to keep up the fight, especially as the attacker because its tough to beat down the defenders. You can?t rebuild units except between campaigns. Yet both players must attack at the right time. The Lancastrian player has an advantage of starting with the King so can play a bit more cagey as the Yorkist needs to be more aggressive.

It just is a pleasure to play. Little downtime once you are comfortable with the rules. Plays fast, is fun, tense all the way until the end. The Block system adds the fog of war so you are always a bit wary about what you are up against.

Overall, Richard III: The War of the Roses is a lot of fun and a great way to have a war game experience in a short space of time. You aren?t going to get a detailed simulation here. The feel is strategic in giving the grand scope of the fighting for who would rule England. This is ultimately a game for casual war gamers who want a fun experience in a limited amount of time which is right up my street. Awesome.Does it feel historically accurate? Well there?s enough for me as I?m more interested in the play with enough to give me a sense of what went on without having to get a headache. I guess as my interest is now piqued to read more about the War of the Roses, its a job well done!

Not necessarily designed for the family, this game could be a nice teaching tool for parent and youngster.

Health Insurance: The Necessity For All | Old State Capitol

Though we all need it, we never enjoy paying for it. However going without a health insurance quote should never be an option, as it is too risky for anybody.

Health Insurance at a very Young age:

Even when you are young and healthy you need health insurance. The main thing about health insurance is the fact that it?s there for your use when you need it the most. Accidents or some major sickness, the bills in the hospitals generally pile up quickly. Getting a cheap health insurance quote is the oasis in the desert to protect yourself and your loved ones from devastating costs of medicines and treatments.
