Small Talk: Small business uneasy about tax collection bills | The ...

In this Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, photo, CEO and President Mike Faith of Headsets.com checks his inventory in his offices in San Francisco. Headsets.com, might have to hire two staffers to handle the administrative work if what's called remote tax collection becomes law, says Faith. Small-business owners may be closer to losing an advantage they?ve enjoyed during the e-commerce boom ? being exempt from collecting sales tax in states where they?re not located. And they?re worried they will have to spend more money in the process.

Under federal law, a state or local government cannot force a company to collect sales tax on a purchase unless the business has a physical presence in that state. The physical presence could range from an actual store to an office, warehouse or distribution center. The sale could be conducted online, over the phone or through mail-order.

The arrangement saves money for shoppers who use price comparison websites or mobile apps, and those who spend time surfing for the best overall deal.

But Washington lawmakers currently have several bills in the works that would end all that by forcing companies to collect the tax. Businesses are split over the issue.

On one side are small retailers who say they wouldn?t be able to bear the costs of collecting the tax and filing reports states and local governments require. They?re worried they?ll have to buy software, hire staffers and deal with the hassle of keeping up with collecting tax from states and thousands of municipalities.

Headsets.com, for instance, might have to hire two staffers to handle the administrative work if what?s called remote tax collection becomes law, says CEO Mike Faith. The company has operations in California and Tennessee, but sells to all 50 states. Currently, federal law only requires the company to collect tax in those two states.

Faith expects the law would force him to hire workers to help his San Francisco-based company comply with it. "It?s useless employment. It doesn?t add value to the company It?s just another cost burden."

On the other side are in-state sellers and larger retailers with physical locations dotted across the country who sometimes lose business to competitors who don?t have to collect the tax. Even if two retailers charge the same amount for an item, many shoppers choose the seller that doesn?t collect taxes.

"It?s a problem that needs to be addressed. It?s an un-level playing field," says David French, a National Retail Federation lobbyist.

And on yet another side, are state and local governments that stand to collect billions in uncollected revenue if a bill makes it through Congress. States have wanted the tax money for decades and are particularly anxious for it now because tax revenue is down following the recession. The payoff could be substantial. In 2012, there was as much as $11.4 billion in uncollected taxes on Internet sales alone, according to University of Tennessee researchers.

story continues below

State and local government officials have wanted to change the law for years, even before the catalog boom of the 1980s and the Internet boom of the ?90s.

Small-business owners have resisted along the way. They argue that the burden of keeping up with the estimated 15,000 different sales tax rates charged by the 7,500 to 9,600 jurisdictions made up of states, counties, cities and towns, is just too much.

They have a point. Knowing how much to tax, and where, can be complicated. For example, Elgin, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, is located in two counties, Cook and Kane. In Cook County, Elgin?s sales tax on general merchandise is 9.25 percent. In Kane, it?s 8.25 percent. The state?s base sales tax is 6.25 percent.

What is taxed also varies widely. In Massachusetts, baby oil is tax-free, but baby lotion and powder aren?t. In states including New York, there?s a tax on shipping charges on items. Others, including California, don?t charge if you get merchandise delivered by the U.S. Postal Service or delivery services like UPS and FedEx.

The effort to change the law intensified as the growth of the Internet increased and companies? out-of-state sales volume swelled. Many sellers felt protected by a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that states could not force out-of-state sellers to collect sales tax. But the court, in effect, invited Congress to create a law that would give the states the authority to require that taxes be collected.

States have a lot of incentive to go after the revenue. The combined budgets of all the states had deficits of more than $100 billion a year from 2009 through 2012, primarily because of the drop in tax receipts during and after the recession, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, an organization that studies tax issues.

Three separate bills were introduced in the last Congress that would authorize the states to require remote sellers to collect taxes. In the Senate, the Marketplace Fairness Act had bipartisan support but did not come to a vote. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., one of the bill?s sponsors, has told The Associated Press the bill was tabled because of concerns by Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., about the burdens tax collection would place on companies in his state, where there is no sales tax.

Behind The Dressing Room Door: Anthropologie Product Reviews ...

Good morning everyone and happy Friday! I hope you all have had a fabulous week. I'm so happy that the weekend is finally here. I've had a rough week at work and I'm looking forward to some relaxation this weekend. Last weekend my Mom and I headed to Anthro to do some reviews. This is a small first set, with Round 2 coming soon so stay tuned!

Now on to the reviews...

Here is Maeve's Fetch & Frolic Dress. This dress fits somewhat TTS. I'm wearing a size 0. I would say that small busted girls should consider sizing down as the back is very stretchy and has give. The dress has an adorable dot print in black and white with a contrasting red ribbon which I love. It's a little log for my 5'3'' frame so I would need to get the Petite version. The dress also has pockets (yay) and removable straps.

Back to the rack for now.

Color: DARK GREY
Pros: Somewhat TTS, contrasting bow, pockets, cute pattern
Cons: Length a little long, can size down if smaller busted
Verdict: B+

Here is the Voksoper Dress. This dress fits pretty TTS. I'm wearing a size 2 here and could easily wear a size 0. This dress is just lovely! I love the white and black sophisticated look of the top paired with the black flowy bottom. The back of the dress is intricate and interesting as well. The length is good for my 5'3'' height as it hits just at the knee. I would like to try the Petite version as I think it would look better slightly shorter.

Lusting.

Pros: TTS, black/white pattern, sophisticated look
Cons: None

Here is Bordeaux's Ruched Striped Column Dress.?This dress fits slightly big. I'm wearing an X-Small and it was loose on me. I would consider trying a size down for your normal size as this is pullover style and is stretchy. The dress is extremely flattering and comfortable on. I really love the black and white look as I can see pairing this with some bright red or turquoise heels. The length hits just at my knee which is okay, but I think it would need to be hemmed. The website says there is a Petite length, but I don't see an option for that.

Back to the rack for now.

Ruched Stripes Column Dress

Here is Ranna Gill's Tropicalia Pleated Maxi Dress. Wow! This dress is just amazing! It fits TTS. I'm wearing a size 0 and it fits like a dream! I love all of the colors, the beautiful painter-like pattern, fit and the detailing on the collar. The length is too long for my 5'3'' frame but they do have a Petite version online. I am going on a Caribbean cruise at the end of March and I think this would be a great dress to wear for one of the formal nights on the cruise.

Purchased a 0P and can't wait to wear it!

Cancer-Stricken Dog Gets Epic Last Meal

One of the hardest experiences that anyone can endure is the loss of a pet. The sometimes prolonged illness leading up to the pet's passing can be even more gut-wrenching. Lennox, a boxer breed, was plagued with cancer and arthritis, and he had survived multiple surgeries, but a recent tumor growth on his left shoulder made it difficult for him to even stand.

Lennox's owner decided that the humane thing to do would be to put Lennox to sleep to end his suffering. His roommate, "Nikolaoss" on Reddit, explained the situation in a post on the site. He included a twist to the story: Lennox would be given an incredible last meal, consisting of a turkey leg, sausage, bacon, and rice. There's even a video of Lennox eating his last meal. Lennox goes for the bacon first.

The post about Lennox received 24,000 upvotes on Reddit -- and tons of positive comments. People offered their condolences and shared their stories of losing pets. One user wrote, "One of the greatest lessons a pet teaches its owner in life is that it ends."

In an update to the original Lennox post, Nikolaoss writes that Lennox was euthanized and passed peacefully on Jan. 23. He added, "Thanks for all the comments, my roommate appreciates it a lot. This post isn't meant to be sad. He lived like an absolute boss all his life!"

Sounds like a fitting end for a beloved pet.

(AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, File)

(AP) ? The nation's labor unions suffered sharp declines in membership last year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday, led by losses in the public sector as cash-strapped state and local governments laid off workers and ? in some cases ? limited collective bargaining rights.

The union membership rate fell from 11.8 percent to 11.3 percent of all workers, the lowest level since the 1930s.

Total membership fell by about 400,000 workers to 14.4 million. More than half the loss ? about 234,000 ? came from government workers including teachers, firefighters and public administrators.

The losses add another blow to a labor movement already stretched thin by fighting efforts in states like Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan to curb bargaining rights and weaken union clout.

But unions also saw losses in the private sector, even as the economy expanded modestly. That rate fell of membership fell from 6.9 percent to 6.6 percent, a troubling sign for the future of organized labor, as job growth has generally taken place at nonunion firms.

"To employers, it's going to look like the labor movement is ready for a knockout punch," said Gary Chaison, professor of industrial relations at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. "You can't be a movement and get smaller."

Unions have steadily lost members since their peak in the 1950s, when about one of every three workers was in a union. By 1983, roughly 20 percent of American workers were union members.

Losses in the public sector are hitting unions particularly hard since that has been one of the few areas where membership was growing over the past two decades. About 51 percent of union members work in government, where until recently, there had been little resistance to union organizing.

That began to change when Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker signed a law in 2011 eliminating most union rights for government workers. The state lost about 46,000 union members last year, mostly in the public sector.

Union officials blame losses on the lingering effects of the recession, as well as GOP governors and state lawmakers who have sought to weaken union rights.

"Our still-struggling economy, weak laws and political as well as ideological assaults have taken a toll on union membership, and in the process have also imperiled economic security and good, middle class jobs," said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

In Indiana, where a new right-to-work law took effect last March, the state lost about 56,000 union members. The law prohibits unions from requiring workers to pay union fees, even if they benefit from a collective bargaining agreement. Michigan lawmakers approved a similar measure in December.

Another problem for unions is an aging membership that is not being replaced by younger members. By age, the union membership rate was highest among workers ages 55 to 64 (14.9 percent) and lowest among those ages 16 to 24 (4.2 percent).

In New York, the state with the highest union density, nearly one-quarter of the workforce belonged to a union. North Carolina had the lowest at 2.9 percent.

Among full-time wage and salary workers, union members in 2012 had median weekly earnings of $943, while those who were not union members earned $742.

Orangutans get iPads in 'Apps for Apes' program

2 hrs.

Orangutans at the Smithsonian's National Zoo are now using iPad apps to keep occupied.

"It's about changing up the day-to-day lives of our animals," Becky Malinsky, a keeper at the zoo, said in a statement. "We already vary their food, toys and social interactions every day, but the iPad offers another way to engage their sight, touch and hearing."

So far, the apes are using 10 different apps, including cognitive games, drawing programs and ones that feature virtual musical instruments. According to their keepers, some of the orangutans are already showing their preferences ? 36-year-old Bonnie likes to hit the drums, 16-year-old Kyle likes to play the piano, and 25-year-old Iris likes watching animated fish swim in a virtual koi pond on the screen.

The iPads were made available through Apps for Apes, an initiative from the conservation organization Orangutan Outreach, which has already provided tablet devices for the intelligent primates in 12 other zoos, including zoos in Houston, Atlanta, Toronto, Utah and Milwaukee. [ 10 iPad Alternatives ]

"Primarily, we want the Apps for Apes program to help people understand why we need to protect wild orangutans from extinction," Richard Zimmerman, founding director of Orangutan Outreach, said in a statement. "We do that when we show zoo visitors how similar humans and apes are, be it through observation, talking with wildlife experts or seeing the apes use the same technology we use every day."

Orangutans are among humans' closest living relatives, and there are only a few tens of thousands of them currently left in the wild. They are found in the Sumatran rain forests, where they are critically endangered, and the Borneo rain forests, where they are endangered.

Green Up Your Abode: Unique Ideas for Making Your Home ...

?

Are you ready to give your home a more eco-friendly ambiance? As the world continues to evolve and warm up to the idea of ?going green?, newly-built businesses and homes are being constructed and designed with environmentally-friendly enhancements. Unless you?re in the market to purchase a new home, living in green surroundings may present a bit of a challenge. However, going green at home is not as difficult, or expensive, as you may expect.

There are multiple ways you can improve your living space to make it ecologically healthy. From upgrading your appliances to constructing an entirely solar-powered room, making even the slightest eco-friendly advances can alter the entire vibe of your household and may even prove to be beneficial for the mental and physical health of you and your family. In addition, transforming your house into a more sustainable living space can save you money when it comes to household expenses. Recent technological advances have made it easy to create a greener environment without spending an exuberant amount of money.

Redesign With Green in Mind

If you already have thoughts of doing some home remodeling, adding some fresh, eco-friendly elements to your house will give it a modern, contemporary touch. Start by replacing your home appliances, such as washing and drying machines and kitchen devices, to sustainable appliances. If you?re in the mood to update your furniture, there are a range of products that use green materials , such as sustainable wood and bamboo, that are both environmentally friendly and chic. Even if you can?t afford major enhancements like installing solar panels, developers are creating new technologies, such as solar-powered paint, that will allow you to generate enough energy to run your home.

Show Off Your ?Green? Thumb

Keeping live plants in and around your home can be useful as they provide a natural solution to cleaner air, brighten up your living quarters, allow you to grow organic herbs and vegetables, and help improve the health of your family. Introducing live plants to your home can also reduce your reliance on appliances used to cool your house because they release moisture into the air and can maintain a comfortable level of humidity. If you have never owned a plant, or lack any sort of gardening skills, you can purchase plants or flowers from retailers like Marks and Spencer. For those who reside in flats or urban areas and cannot cultivate their own gardens, there are innovative gardening systems designed to be used indoors. Vertical farming enables you to grow your own herbs, vegetables, and other plants in your home without the need for exterior env
ironmental elements. Through the use of hydroponics, which is the process of replacing soil with mineral nutrient solvents, and common products that can be found in any home improvement store or shop that sells gardening supplies, you can create your own in-house garden.

Whether your green interior design project includes large-scale renovations, or small eco-friendly advancements, creating a sustainable habitat for you and your family improves the look and feel of your home and offers a better living environment for your family.

Step by Step Guide To A Self-Build ? UK Home Improvement Blog

As the UK housing market continues its tentative recovery, there has also been a marked rise in the number of self-build home completions. Having initially risen by 3.75% during the first financial quarter of 2012, the rate of self build projects continued to grow steadily throughout the remainder of the year. With aspiring home-owners showcasing an enhanced awareness of social responsibility and sustainable living, this trend is unlikely to abate anytime soon.

A Step by Step Guide to Constructing a Self Build Home

While a growing number of citizens are looking to construct a self-build home, however, doing it correctly is an altogether more difficult aspiration. Consider the following five step guide towards a successful self-build project: -

?

?? Lay Solid Foundations: Regardless of the types of timber or framing that you intend to use, it is important to lay solid foundations. Ensure that your builders follow architectural plans to the letter, using either concrete or slab foundations to provide the most reliable structural support.

?? Carefully Lay Out Interior and Exterior Walls: Once you begin to build upwards from your foundation, you should carefully lay out the interior and exterior walls with chalk. This also gives you an opportunity to frame the floor system, and ensure the integrity of your design.

?? Brace the First Floor Exterior Walls: With the layout of your internal and external walls secured, you can now begin to erect them. In order to do this correctly and provide adequate support, it is wise to reinforce them with bracing lumber. This will need to be repeated in any structure that is multi-story.

?? Make Roofing the Final Framing Step: Once the structure of the house is upstanding, you can then add the roof. You must first frame the roof rafters and set any roof trusses accordingly, before fixing the decking and laying the accompanying felt. With the roof sheathed, the structure of your property is completed.

?? Fit Windows and Doors as Quickly as Possible: With the frame built, it is time to set all external windows and doors. This should be done as quickly as possible, in order to maintain the integrity of the property and its reliability. Any additional cladding or siding can then be added, to help create a desired aesthetic.

UN: Prisoners still tortured in Afghan prisons

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The United Nations said Sunday that Afghan authorities were still torturing prisoners, such as hanging them by their wrists and beating them with cables, a year after the U.N. first documented the abuse and the Afghan government promised detention reform.

The report shows little progress in curbing abuse in Afghan prisons despite a year of effort by the U.N. and international military forces in Afghanistan. The report also cites instances where Afghan authorities have tried to hide mistreatment from U.N. monitors.

The slow progress on prison reform has prompted NATO forces to once again stop many transfers of detainees to Afghan authorities out of concern that they would be tortured.

In multiple detention centers, Afghan authorities leave detainees hanging from the ceiling by their wrists, beat them with cables and wooden sticks, administer electric shocks, twist their genitals and threaten to shove bottles up their anuses or to kill them, the report said.

In a letter responding to the latest report, the Afghan government said that its internal monitoring committee found that "the allegations of torture of detainees were untrue and thus disproved." The Afghan government said that it would not completely rule out the possibility of torture at its detention facilities, but that it was nowhere near the levels described in the report and that it was checking on reports of abuse.

The findings, however, highlight the type of human rights abuses that many activists worry could become more prevalent in Afghanistan as international forces draw down and the country's Western allies become less watchful over a government that so far has taken few concrete actions to reform the system.

As one detainee in the western province of Farah told the U.N. team: "They laid me on the ground. One of them sat on my feet and another one sat on my head, and the third one took a pipe and started beating me with it. They were beating me for some time like one hour and were frequently telling me that, 'You are with Taliban and this is what you deserve.'"

More than half of the 635 detainees interviewed had been tortured, according to the report titled Treatment of Conflict-Related Detainees in Afghan Custody: One Year On. That is about the same ratio the U.N. found in its first report in 2011.

It's a troubling finding given the amount of international attention and pledges of reform that came after the first report. At that time, the NATO military alliance temporarily stopped transferring Afghans it had picked up to national authorities until they could set up a system free of abuse. Though it said the findings were exaggerated, the Afghan government promised after the first report to increase monitoring.

But little appears to have changed. Once NATO forces resumed the transfers and decreased inspections, torture quickly returned to earlier levels, the report said. And even though the international military force was making a serious effort to delay transfers if there was risk of torture, about 30 percent of 79 detainees who had been transferred to Afghan custody by foreign governments ended up being tortured, the report said. That's higher than in 2011, when the U.N. found that 24 percent of transferred detainees were tortured.

"Torture cannot be addressed by training, inspections and directives alone," said Georgette Gagnon, the head of human rights for the U.N. mission in Afghanistan, explaining that there has been little follow-through by the Afghan government.

In particular, the U.N. report found that the Afghan government appeared to be trying to hide the mistreatment and refusing to prosecute those accused of torturing prisoners.

The U.N. team received "multiple credible reports" that in some places detainees were hidden from international observers in secret locations underground or separate from the main facility being inspected. Also, the observers said they saw what appeared to be a suspicious increase in detainees held at police facilities when an intelligence service facility nearby was being monitored.

And particularly in the southern province of Kandahar, the U.N. received reports that authorities were using unofficial sites to torture detainees before transporting them to the regular prison.

In a letter responding to the U.N. report, Gen. John Allen, the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said that his staff had written letters to Afghan ministers urging them to investigate more than 80 separate allegations of detainee abuse during the past 18 months.

"To date, Afghan officials have acted in only one instance," Allen said in the letter. In that case Afghan authorities did not fire the official in question, but transferred him from Kandahar province to Sar-e-Pul in the north.

The report documents what it called a "persistent lack of accountability for perpetrators of torture," noting that no one has been prosecuted for prisoner abuse since the first report was released.

Aimal Faizi, a spokesman for the Afghan president, said torture and abuse of prisoners was not Afghan policy.

"However, there may be certain cases of abuse and we have begun to investigate these cases mentioned in the U.N. report," he said. "We will take actions accordingly."

The NATO military alliance responded to the most recent report by stopping transfers of detainees to seven facilities in Kabul, Laghman, Herat, Khost and Kunduz provinces ? most of them the same facilities that were flagged a year ago. The transfers were halted in October, when the U.N. shared its preliminary findings with the military coalition.

"This action is a result of concerns over detainee treatment at certain Afghan detention facilities," said Jamie Graybeal, a spokesman for the international military alliance in Kabul.

He said there has been no suspension of transfers to the massive detention center next to Bagram Air Field outside of Kabul. That facility has been particularly contentious because the U.S. has held back from transferring all the detainees it holds there to Afghan custody.

But as international troops draw down in Afghanistan, there will be fewer people to monitor the Afghan detention centers. Allen said in his letter that the NATO military alliance planned to focus on monitoring only a subset of Afghan facilities in the future.

And even the manner in which the U.N. report was compiled and released shows the waning influence of Western allies over the Afghan government. Both last year and again on Sunday, the report was released without a news conference. Instead, it was quietly posted on the U.N. website in what appeared to be an effort to avoid publicly antagonizing the Afghan government that it criticizes in the report.

"I think it's being dealt with in the appropriate way. Maybe we don't need to do it publicly," Gagnon said, noting that there have been plenty of discussions with the Afghan government about how to improve the prison system.

Asked what progress had been made toward improving the prison system since 2011, Gagnon was at a loss to give an example. But, she stressed: "There has been quite a lot of effort."

Young Professionals Battle Cancer With A Ball ? CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? A Twin Cities group called Young Professionals Finding a Cure are hoping to better fight cancer.

And they?re holding a masquerade ball next week.

From 8 p.m. to midnight next Saturday, Aria in the warehouse district of Minneapolis will be the place to fight cancer.

?We get together a couple times a year to put on events to support the American Cancer Society and the money goes to support research grants at the University of Minnesota,? Amy Covington said.

Each year, the group comes together for a big winter gala.

?Every year we change themes ? last year was the Great Gatsby,? Covington said.

This year will be a masquerade ball.

Kaylee Schwertfeger is a University of Minnesota breast cancer researcher. She knows these events help her work.

?So in cancer research, as funding has decreased from the federal level, we?re really relying on people who go out and raise the funds from the public in order to do the research,? she said.

Last year, the group raised $54,000.

New Jersey Fish and Game

Trenton, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- The Department of Environmental Protection has launched a new mobile phone application designed to provide information and technology to guide and enhance users? hunting, fishing and wildlife watching experiences, and to provide added safety and enjoyment for outdoor enthusiasts at all of New Jersey?s wildlife management areas, state parks and forests, and other public open spaces.

?This is part of the Christie Administration?s continuing effort to bring more people into our state parks and wildlife areas, to enhance offerings and make it easier and more convenient for our residents to enjoy the great diversity of fish and wildlife and outdoor recreation opportunities in New Jersey,?? said DEP Commissioner Bob Martin.

The free Pocket Ranger New Jersey Fish and Wildlife application is a cutting-edge mobile app that provides on-the-spot information on the state?s fish and wildlife species along with extensive mapping of public open spaces, showing and providing site information on access points for hunting, fishing, boating and wildlife watching.

Pocket Ranger has social networking capabilities, and provides an advanced map-caching feature that allows users to continue to navigate even if mobile service is lost. In addition, advanced GPS technology allows users to keep track of where they are, how far they?ve gone and to mark favorite hunting spots, fishing holes or wildlife sightings.

The application also has a Friend Finder feature that allows users to keep track of the location of friends and family. As an added safety utility, Pocket Ranger has an alert feature that notifies select contacts of your GPS coordinates in the event of an emergency. The application has many other features including weather information, a real-time calendar of events, rules and regulations, and important permit and licensing details.

?This exciting new app, along with the State Parks app, provides our residents and visitors with great tools to make their outdoor experiences even more enjoyable and memorable,?? said Dave Chanda, DEP?s Division of Fish and Wildlife director. ?This application has features that are valuable to anyone interested in the outdoors in New Jersey from the novice sportsperson learning how and where to hunt and fish to the most seasoned wildlife watcher looking for rare species information.?

In future versions of the app already under development, users will be able to submit rare species sightings and connect after a fruitful day in the field sharing, commenting, and comparing what they saw or harvested through online message boards, including a ?trophy case?? for proud anglers and hunters.

The application is compatible with both Apple and Android mobile devices. Links for downloading either version are provided at http://www.pocketranger.com/apps/nj-fw/apps.php.

?Our expectation is for the Pocket Ranger Fish and Wildlife Guide to encourage a new generation of users to explore and discover all that New Jersey has to offer in the way of fish and wildlife related recreation,? said ParksByNature co-founder and program coordinator Brett Melillo. ?This robust mobile app will enhance the outdoor experience, raise awareness about New Jersey?s incredible outdoor resources and help maintain the license revenues necessary to maintain and improve the state?s fish and wildlife populations.?

The DEP will receive a portion of advertising revenues generated by the application, which is being provided to the Department at no cost.

1968 Shelby EXP 500 fails to sell at Barrett-Jackson despite $1.8 ...

Barrett-Jackson Lot: 5022 - 1968 SHELBY EXP 500 "THE GREEN HORNET"

The legendary Shelby prototype Green Hornet enjoys the distinct history of being one of the very few factory prototypes from that era that survived the crusher. It represents a rolling history of what was happening within Ford and Shelby American in the heyday of the American muscle car era. In 1967 the Ford team was impressed with a prototype Mustang known as "Li'l Red" which inspired the "California Special" also known as the GT/CS. As a result of this effort, two prototypes were built. One of those prototypes was VIN 8F01S104288, a Lime Gold, 1968 Mustang notchback, with a deluxe Ivy Gold interior, 390 V8 engine and C6 automatic transmission. After completing the show circuit, the decision was made not to move forward with the GT/SC program, but instead of being scrapped, the Lime Gold notchback was sent to Shelby American to once again become a prototype, this time for a different kind of Mustang...a Shelby. It was going to be an experimental Shelby, EXP 500, a prototype that would become fondly known as "The Green Hornet." Many modifications were done, as the Green Hornet became the platform for innovation in design, performance and handling, including an experimental Conelec fuel injection system, independent rear suspension and a unique rear disc brake configuration. The Green Hornet became the pet-project of Fred Goodell, Chief Engineer at Shelby American, and both Fred and Carroll Shelby himself spent a lot of time testing and developing components for this project. The destiny of most all concepts and prototypes of the era, especially when the concept did not make it into production, was to meet their demise at the business-end of a crusher. In the case of the Green Hornet, fate intervened, and a Ford executive's fondness for the car, and his ability to wrangle some paperwork, saved the Green Hornet from the crusher and allowed it to slip into the mainstream where it enjoyed a somewhat mundane existence for decades until it was rediscovered and restored back to its former glory. The provenance and story of this incredibly significant piece of Ford, Shelby, and muscle car history is widely publicized and documented. For decades it was thought that the Green Hornet had been destroyed like "Li'l Red" and its celebrated existence had become nothing more than urban legend. When the Green Hornet was discovered to be alive and well and documented by none other than Fred Goodell himself, it was nothing short of miraculous. The Green Hornet's provenance of being a double-prototype, and an experimental platform for innovation and design, puts it into a unique category and represents the best of the best at both Ford and Shelby at the time. Arguably the rarest and most desirable Shelby Mustang of all time, with a documented provenance verifying its authenticity and history, it is, as Carroll said: "the one and only Green Hornet."

Greece: Shots fired at ruling party HQ

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? A gunman fired a spray of bullets at the headquarters of the governing center-right New Democracy party near central Athens early Monday, with one hitting an office occasionally used by the country's prime minister, officials said. No one was hurt.

Police cordoned off the area where an unknown attacker fired an automatic rifle at the building on the capital's busy Syngrou Avenue, south of the city center.

No group claimed immediate responsibility for the attack, which occurred amid a renewed wave of politically-motivated violence by small anarchist and far-left groups.

Government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said a bullet hit the window of the office which is used occasionally by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and was found inside the room. No party officials were in the building at the time of the attack. The official prime minister's office is at another building in central Athens, where he spends most of his time.

"Of course there could have been (victims). There could have been a cleaner in the prime minister's office or a security guard at the site," Kedikoglou said.

"The government will take every action necessary to safeguard our democracy."

Police said the attacker was believed to have had at least one accomplice, while experts were examining a car found abandoned and burned near the scene of the shooting.

The conservative New Democracy heads a three-party coalition government formed after elections last June and is leading Greece's painful economic recovery effort to cut its high public debt and budget deficit through deeply resented spending cuts and tax hikes.

Over the weekend, arsonists attacked the home of the brother of government spokesman Kedikoglou with a firebomb.

The unknown attackers broke down the door with a sledgehammer and threw a firebomb inside. No one was hurt.

How the Association Fees Stack Up - Chicago Agent Magazine

by Peter Ricci

rsz_feesWith the ?broker?s choice? model in place, Chicagoland?s real estate agents are free to join whichever Realtor association suits their fancy, regardless of what region it represents. Why should agents, though, choose one association over another? And how do the various fees, costs and benefits of Chicagoland?s Realtor associations differ?

To answer that question, we compared the local dues, MLS fees, Sentrilock fees and unique member benefits of five associations: the Chicago Association of Realtors (CAR); the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors (MORe); the North Shore-Barrington Association of Realtors (NSBAR); the Heartland Realtor Organization (HRO); and the Realtor Association of the Fox Valley. The associations provided us with the information below, except for the Oak Park Area Association of Realtors? (OPAAR) and the Three Rivers Association of Realtors, which declined to participate.

Which Atlanta Housewife May Be Hearing Wedding Bells In The Near Future?

question mark

I am one to gossip and word on the street is that Kandi Burruss may be hearing wedding bells in the near future. The RHOA? may be an official housewife as her new boyfriend Todd Tucker reportedly proposed recently. Kandi has never been married, but was engaged to now deceased A.J. Jewell.

Kandi and Todd met on the set of ?Real Housewives of Atlanta,? while filming the girls? trip to South Africa and started dating during the trip. Dating is forbidden amongst cast and crew, and you know it was real because Todd was willing to quit his job so they could continue their romance, but the company decided to assign him to another show and he was allowed to keep his job.

Kandi told VH1?s ?Big Morning Buzz:?

?Well I didn?t think we were allowed to do it [date crew members], but he was willing to resign from the show. Yeah you know, we really got deep and we were like, ?We got to make a decision.? At first you know it was hush, hush. And then it just got to a point where we were like, you know what, we don?t care how anybody feels about it. So he doesn?t really work on our show anymore, he still works for the same company, he?s just on a different show.?

The couple recently moved in together and it looks like congratulations may be in order!

Foods for Thyroid Disease ? Health and Fitness - business new ...

Thyroid Foods

Foods that we eat play a role in production of Thyroid Hormones, excessive action of the thyroid gland can cause Graves? Disease, while under activity can cause Myxedema.

Thyroid Gland

Thyroid Gland

?Foods that reduce Thyroid Function

  • Certain foods contain chemicals which block the production of thyroid hormone, particularly cabbage, broccoli, rutabaga, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, watercress, and peanuts. Cooking partially inactivates the interfering chemical, known medically as a Goitrogen. Thus, in most cases it is wise to eat these foods cooked. Raw peanuts or soybeans should never be eaten. Fortunately, peanut butter is heated to a high enough degree that the Goitrogens are destroyed.?
  • Milk is a major contributing factor to thyroid problems, especially since modern dairy products often contain traces of antibiotics such as penicillin and hormones which place an even greater burden on your endocrine system.
  • Soy. Soy is a Goitrogen known to depress thyroid functioning.
  • Sugar. At? high level of sugar intake, there is a risk of damaging or even destroying the adrenal and thyroid glands.

Crime writer Cornwell has personal courtroom drama

BOSTON (AP) ? For more than two decades, crime writer Patricia Cornwell has famously dramatized the life of a fictional medical examiner in her best-selling books. Now, she has her own personal drama unfolding in federal court.

Cornwell, a wildly successful author through her novels about Dr. Kay Scarpetta, is suing her former financial management firm and business manager for negligence and breach of contract, claiming they cost her and her company millions in investment losses and unaccounted for revenues during their 4?-year relationship.

The Boston trial has opened a window into the life of the intensely private Cornwell, who has had to listen from the front row of the courtroom while a lawyer for the management firm described her spending habits for the jury: $40,000 a month for an apartment in New York City, $5 million for a private jet service, $11 million to buy properties in Concord, Mass.

Cornwell's spouse, Staci Gruber, a neuroscientist who is an assistant psychiatry professor at Harvard Medical School, spent much of the first week of the trial on the witness stand testifying about the couple's relationship with Anchin, Block & Anchin LLP, a New York accounting and wealth management firm, and Evan Snapper, a former principal in the firm.

Cornwell fired the firm after discovering in July 2009 that the net worth of her and her company, despite having eight-figure earnings per year during the previous four years, was a little under $13 million, the equivalent of only one year's net income. She also claims in the lawsuit that Anchin had borrowed several million dollars, including mortgages for property and a loan for the purchase of a helicopter, and had lost millions by moving her from a conservative investment strategy to high-risk without her permission.

Cornwell, 56, says problems caused by Anchin and Snapper were so distracting that they caused her to miss a book deadline for the first time in her career and cost her $15 million in non-recoverable advances and commissions.

Lawyers for Anchin and Snapper deny Cornwell's claims. During opening statements at the trial, attorney James Campbell described Cornwell as "a demanding client" who "tends to push off responsibility and assign blame when things go off track."

"I do what I do when and how I do it," she allegedly wrote in an email to Snapper read by Campbell to the jury.

Anchin and Snapper claim there is no money missing from Cornwell's accounts, that any investment losses were caused by the financial and housing crisis at the time, and that the fees they charged her were reasonable for the services they provided, including everything from business management to bringing Cornwell's clothes to the tailor to arranging care for her mother.

"Where did the money go? Ms. Cornwell and Dr. Gruber spent the money," Campbell said. "You have to consider the large lifestyles involved, the spending habits, impulsive buying."

Cornwell, who is expected to testify during the trial, says in the lawsuit that Anchin borrowed money in her name for real estate investments ventures without telling her. She said she also found checks written for expenses she never authorized, including a $5,000 check for a bat mitzvah gift to Snapper's daughter from Cornwell.

Cornwell said one of Anchin's primary functions in 2006 was to ensure that locations were arranged where she could write without distraction while her home was undergoing reconstruction. She said Snapper leased a series of expensive apartments, including one at Trump Tower in New York, that she had to leave long before leases expired because of construction, privacy or other issues.

In the lawsuit, Cornwell openly acknowledges her struggles with bipolar disorder, an illness she said has contributed to her belief that she needs other people to manage her business affairs and investments. She said Anchin was aware of her illness.

"This case is, at is core, about trust," her lawyer, Joan Lukey, told the jury. "There is no amount of money that is enough to properly compensate her for what Anchin, Block and Anchin did."

Cornwell, a former newspaper reporter, also worked for the chief medical examiner's office in Virginia before her first novel in the Scarpetta series was published in the early 1990s. During the course of her career, she has sold more than 100 million books.

This isn't the first time that Cornwell's personal life has grabbed headlines.

In the early 1990s, Cornwell had an affair with Margo Bennett, a married FBI agent, which came out years later after Bennett's estranged husband was arrested and convicted for the attempted murder of his wife and the abduction of her pastor.

After Cornwell filed the lawsuit in 2009, Snapper pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance laws by buying $50,000 in tickets to an Elton John concert benefiting Hillary Rodham Clinton, using Cornwell's money. He paid a fine.

The Boston trial is expected to last about a month.
