I was introduced to the idea of role playing some years back and since then, I've been doing it fairly often. I love the freedom that a role play grants people so it's even more exciting for me to know that such a large community like this exists for the purpose of role-playing!
I hope to make lots of friends here, and role-play to my hearts content!

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain (AP) ? Protesters jeered the Spanish king's son-in-law before he was questioned Saturday by a judge about allegations he and a partner funneled away millions of euros through fraudulent deals.
The investigation has deeply embarrassed the monarchy in a country hard hit by a financial crisis and sky-high unemployment. The scandal ranks among the worst public relations mishaps the royal household has experienced in the 37-year reign of King Juan Carlos.
Inaki Urdangarin, who has not been charged with a crime, made his way into a courthouse in Palma de Mallorca amid tense street scenes where a contingent of around 170 police kept several hundred protesters away from the building. Urdangarin, married to the 75-year-old king's second daughter, Princess Cristina, has denied any wrongdoing.
Urdangarin, facing his second appearance in court, did not stop to say anything, but wished about 100 journalists accredited to cover the event a curt "good morning" as he walked in, accompanied by his lawyer Mario Pascual Vives.
The Duke of Palma, the title held by Urdangarin, had been called to answer questions behind closed doors at a courthouse on this Mediterranean island about whether he used his high-profile status to secure lucrative deals for a nonprofit foundation he ran and then fraudulently diverted money for personal gain.
But the conservative government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has moved to try and shield the king from potential collateral damage inflicted by the Urdangarin case, emphasizing Juan Carlos' value to the nation.
Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria defended the king's role three times during a news conference following Friday's Cabinet meeting, highlighting how the monarch had worked "for stability and democracy" in Spain.
Judge Jose Castro will question Urdangarin about three alleged offenses against the Treasury, including corporate tax fraud related to his foundation and matters linked to his personal income tax returns. Under Spanish law, the court will decide whether the prosecution has adequate evidence to file charges against the duke.
As stated in the writ of summons, the judge also intends to ask about alleged bank accounts in tax havens such as Andorra, Luxembourg and Switzerland. Carlos Garcia Revenga, Cristina's personal secretary, arrived for questioning in the afternoon.
A week ago, Urdangarin's former partner, Diego Torres, faced detailed questioning by Castro and it is reported many potentially damaging documents were handed over to the judge. Urdangarin was summoned by Castro to the same court last February when the duke was quizzed over large contracts he secured from regional governments for his foundation.
He is suspected of then subcontracting the work to private companies he also oversaw, sometimes charging the public purse unrealistically inflated prices and syphoning some of the income to offshore tax havens.
Newspapers have reported that the revenues Urdangarin and associates are suspected of having handled may have exceeded ?6 million ($8 million).
The duke's alleged misdeeds took place in 2004-2006. Urdangarin, the princess and their four children moved to Washington in 2009 as the investigation began to heat up. They returned to Spain in August.
The case exploded in the media late 2011 as Spain was buffeted by Europe's debt crisis, its economic growth grinding to a halt and already huge jobless numbers swelling.

It?s been a long time coming, we?ve teased it, talked about it, redesigned it several times, and now it?s finally here. Welcome to KBMOD 3.0.
We couldn?t have gotten here without a lot of help, and the incredible talents of our Web Master Sean, and our designers Brandon, Farez and Ryan. There?s a lot of new stuff for you to check out, the biggest change being our forum system. We?ve migrated over all the old posts, and as many of the old accounts as we could. However, if you were a user of our forums that logged in via Twitter and had less than 10 posts, you?re going to need to sign up for the forums again. Unfortunately due to API changes at Twitter, we?ve discontinued offering them as a log in option. If you were a user that logged in with Twitter and had more than 10 posts, you can email Sean and he?ll get your account configured with the new login process. If you aren?t sure if you qualified for this, you can take a look at the list Sean has compiled here. Also, the main site and the forum logins are now separate, however you account information should be the same for both.
We?ve also heard you, you want to take a bigger role in KBMOD and the content we post here. You asked for it, and we listened. If you?ve got a story, an article, an opinion piece or something else you think we?d be interested in running here on the site, you can submit it via the Community Inbox and we?ll take a look at it. If we?re interested in running it, we?ll get back to you to go through the editing and publishing process before it goes live on the site.
It should also be easier for you to see which of our Live Streams, which streamer is live and when, as we?ve highlighted our upcoming events right here on the main page along with our most recent YouTube posts.
You?ll also notice certain things might be missing, namely the Dual Stream page. We?re in the process of reworking the layout for that, and will be adding it back in as soon as we can. There are also a couple of posts that content might not have moved over 100% correctly, we?re aware of that issue and are in the process of fixing those posts. If you happen across a bug, or an issue with the site, make sure you shoot us an email letting us know so we can get it sorted out.
In the mean time, take a look around. Get nice and cozy, this is your new KBMOD, and we?re so excited for it to finally be live.
Update: On the blog side, all users who logged in via twitter have been deleted. So please feel free to make a new account. On the forum side, still send Sean an email if you can?t log in. (Hint: try the password reset form first ? just enter your username.)

Tobias Harris and Charles Jenkins have a lot in common:
New Yorkers.
Played their best ball on Long Island.
Selected in the 2011 NBA draft.
Traded Thursday.
Harris, 20, a second-year forward out of Tennessee who graduated from Half Hollow Hills West, was traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Orlando Magic as part of the J.J. Redick deal.
Jenkins, 23, Hofstra's all-time leading scorer, was traded from the Golden State Warriors to the Philadelphia 76ers. The guard was drafted 44th overall in 2011, 25 spots after Harris was taken. Golden State, which is trying to get under the NBA's luxury-tax threshold, received cash and a protected second-round pick from Philadelphia.
The 6-8 Harris is averaging 4.9 points and 2.0 rebounds in 11.6 minutes per game this season. The 6-3 Jenkins, who has played sparingly, is averaging 1.7 points.
The Magic agreed to trade veteran shooting guard Redick, center Gustavo Ayon and reserve point guard Ish Smith to the Bucks in exchange for Doron Lamb, Beno Udrih and Harris.
Big names stay put
The stars rumored to be on the move at the trade deadline went nowhere. The Hawks' Josh Smith, the Celtics' Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce and the Lakers' Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard didn't get traded.
The Celtics traded injured guard Leandro Barbosa and center Jason Collins to the Wizards for Jordan Crawford. The Raptors traded for Sebastian Telfair, who starred at Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. The Suns got a second-round draft pick and the rights to center Hamed Haddadi. -- Combined news services

HOUSTON (AP) ? If Kobe Bryant's season seems tough, imagine what Dwyane Wade went through five years ago.
"I came to All-Star weekend one year, I think we had won nine games. Seriously," Wade said Friday. "I was looking for my 10th win at the All-Star game."
Things sure have changed for his Miami Heat.
Back where they first teamed up as All-Stars in 2006, Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh return as NBA champions who will start together for the Eastern Conference on Sunday night.
Now the misery belongs to Bryant, Dwight Howard and the Los Angeles Lakers, whose season has been so disappointing that Bryant was asked Friday if the All-Star weekend was a "retreat" for him.
"I don't know if it's a retreat, it's just more of an opportunity to get some rest, regroup, put the first half of the season behind us and move on," he said.
As Wade knows, the All-Star break can be just that ? a break ? from a forgettable season.
He arrived for the 2008 All-Star game with a 9-43 record after the Heat lost on Valentine's Day to the Chicago Bulls, on their way to a 15-win debacle just two years after they won the NBA title.
"I put all that aside though, and I came and I enjoyed the weekend, and when I went back to Miami, it was like, 'Oh my God, we're back in it,'" Wade said. "But All-Star weekend, you just enjoy being an All-Star. You enjoy being around the guys. You can kind of forget about that a little bit, unless you have the cameras and the microphones in front of you asking you questions about it, but besides that you try to enjoy it."
This time, the Heat celebrated Valentine's Day in Oklahoma City with a 110-100 victory over the Thunder, the team they beat in five games last summer for the title. They have won seven in a row, James is playing arguably the best basketball of his career, and they can relax and reminisce as they return to Houston.
"It's really indescribable," Bosh said, "just to not only win a championship with great guys, be in a great locker room, and just to have fun doing it, but just to be an All-Star every year, play with great teammates, I mean to play in front of a lot people in arenas every night. I don't take those things for granted."
James, Wade and Bosh were in their third NBA seasons when they were chosen for the 2006 game, which turned out like so many Heat games these days. James was voted MVP after scoring 29 points and leading a huge East comeback that was wrapped up when Wade made the go-ahead basket with 16 seconds left.
Think about that: James was already the best player that night, and he was nowhere near the player he is today.
"I'm a better player. At that point in time, I wasn't a complete basketball player. I couldn't shoot as well as I can now, I never posted up back then," James said. "More games, more playoff games, more knowledge. You continue to learn each and every day, it makes you a better player. That's what you want, to become a better player. That's what I want. I want to be the greatest of all-time. I try to do whatever it takes to get me in that position.
"Seven years, I've tried to improve each and every year."
He's gotten to the point now where he ran off an NBA-record six straight games with at least 30 points and 60 percent shooting from the field, and seems to be distancing himself from anyone else that can take the MVP award he won last year for the third time in four years.
"He's doing well," Bosh said in a Texas-sized understatement. "That's the best way to put it."
Bosh was chosen as a starter Friday by Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, who will lead the East. He replaces Boston guard Rajon Rondo, who pulled out with a torn ACL.
Bryant and Howard are still here, away from a Los Angeles season that's been anything but a Hollywood story.
Considered a title contender after acquiring Howard and Steve Nash in the summer, the Lakers fell to 25-29 after they were blown out Wednesday by the rival Clippers, who opened a 13-game lead over them in the Pacific Division standings.
Smiling as he sat with his daughter, Natalia, Bryant laughed that he wished the All-Star break was a chance for the Lakers to "hit the reset button" on what he's said has been a most difficult season.
"Hopefully there's an easy button like in the commercial when we come back in the second half of the season and things are a little easier for us," he said.
Howard has battled injuries to his back and shoulder and has been nothing like the player who has been the NBA's dominant big man in recent years. He said at times he hasn't been having fun and has tried to ignore all the bad news around the team.
"You just try to stay away from the tube and do as much as I can to rehab my back and my shoulder and my mind, and really just get away from everything when I'm not playing basketball," he said.
If he's looking for a chance to enjoy himself this season, it may get no better than the next few days.
"It's a great weekend, it's an unbelievable weekend for the fans to be able to put all their favorite players together in one venue," James said. "We have a great time with it."

Vincent Connare created Comic Sans in 1994, and it has been many in typographer and graphic designer's nightmares since then. The popular sans-serif typeface lacks intellectual heft, and has been referred to as "a malformed, pathetic excuse for a font." There are even communities who want to eliminate the offending typeface altogether. Video blogger Michael Stevens may stand alone, yet he almost convinces us of the font's value in his short video, "A Defense of Comic Sans."
This is but one of many videos investigating life's queries on Vsauce. It's easy to liken him to lovable nerds like Bill Nye The Science Guy with segments like "Can We Taxidermy Humans?" and "Is the Five Second Rule True?" In the video above, Stevens argues the much-hated font actually represents a turning point in typeface history. Tracing the history of fonts from medieval scrolls to the advent of Microsoft, he claims that Comic Sans is evidence that typography, once a specialized artform, is now accesible to everyone. If typeface is "fashion for letters," as Stevens says, it is not Comic Sans's fault if we have the bad taste to use it for undignified documents like divorce papers.
Check out the rest of the video above to find where "lower case" and "upper case" came from -- hint: it has to do with where letter stamps were stored -- as well as other awesomely nerdy typography facts. And read Mike Lacher's hilarious defense of the typeface in McSweeney's here.

Feb. 13, 2013 ? The experimental drug selumetinib may allow some patients with advanced thyroid cancer to overcome resistance to radioiodine (RAI), the most effective therapy for the disease, according to new research from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Published in the Feb. 14 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the study offers new hope for patients with a disease that can have a poor prognosis. An estimated 56,000 new cases of thyroid cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States, and that number is on the rise, according to the National Cancer Institute. About 5 percent of these patients will eventually develop distant metastatic disease, and the ten-year survival rate for patients with metastatic tumors that fail to respond to RAI is approximately 10 percent.
According to James A. Fagin, MD, Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Endocrinology Service Chief and senior author on the study, many trials have tested strategies for overcoming RAI resistance in metastatic thyroid cancers, but none have been successful. Previous studies have shown that a cell's ability to absorb RAI is controlled by the MAPK pathway, so Dr. Fagin and his colleagues examined whether selumetinib, an MAPK inhibitor, could reverse RAI resistance by inhibiting the signaling of genetic mutations in this pathway. The approach proved effective, especially in patients with thyroid cancers that contain a mutation in the RAS gene -- a component of the MAPK pathway.
"Blocking this key pathway increased the uptake of iodine, making radioiodine treatment potentially effective once again," said Fagin, who led this research in cells and in mice.
Following a five-day low-iodine diet, researchers administered selumetinib to 20 patients with tumors resistant to radioiodine. After four weeks, patients underwent a diagnostic scan that measured how much RAI their tumors would absorb. In eight patients, including all five with an NRAS gene mutation, selumetinib increased iodine uptake enough to allow patients to undergo RAI therapy.
Following RAI, five patients had confirmed partial responses and three had stable disease. In seven of the eight patients, outcomes remained unchanged during six months of follow-up. All eight patients had a decreased level of serum thyroglobulin -- a protein in the blood used to screen for advanced thyroid cancer -- and none experienced serious side effects from selumetinib.
"An advantage of this therapeutic strategy is that only a short course of drug therapy is required to elicit a significant clinical effect," Fagin said, adding that "the initial results show promise for RAS-mutant disease, but the hope is that a larger trial will shed light on whether selumetinib can be effective for a broader range of advanced thyroid cancer subtypes."
Memorial Sloan-Kettering will lead the international, multicenter phase III clinical trial of selumetinib later this year. The trial, which will be sponsored by AstraZeneca, will enroll patients who have recently had their thyroid gland removed -- a procedure known as total thyroidectomy -- due to thyroid cancer that has spread to nearby tissue or lymph nodes.

Diana Medley, a special-education teacher at a different school, said Sunday, Feb. 10, that allowing gay and lesbian students to attend the prom at Sullivan High School is "offensive to us."
By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News
Students and the principal at an Indiana high school are disavowing a campaign by parents to organize a "gay-free" prom.
Even the pastor of the church that hosted the original organizing meeting says the church doesn't back the effort to throw a straights-only prom for students at Sullivan High School in Sullivan, Ind., south of Terre Haute.
The movement began after Principal David Springer was asked to clarify whether same-sex couples would be allowed to take part in the traditional grand march before the prom, which is scheduled for April 27.
"Anybody can go to the prom," Springer told NBC station WTHR of Indianapolis. "Of course, a girl could go out with another girl if they didn't have a date or that was their choice."
One of those attending the small gathering of parents Sunday night at Sullivan First Christian Church was Diana Medley, a special-education teacher at another school, North Central Junior/Senior High School, in nearby Farmersburg.
Allowing gay and lesbian students to attend the prom is "offensive to us," said Medley, who told NBC station WTWO of Terre Haute that even though she doesn't agree with them, she does care for "homosexual students" who come to her with their problems.?
Then, Medley created a firestorm of criticism by equating gay and lesbian teenagers to students with developmental disabilities.
"It's the same thing with my special-needs kids," she said. "I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason."
Asked whether gays and lesbians have any "purpose in life," she replied:
"No, I honestly don't. Sorry, but I don't. I don't understand it."
Commentators from across the country weighed in to criticize Medley, including syndicated columnist Dan Savage, who publicized a petition to have Medley fired.?
Dale Wise, senior minister at Sullivan First Christian Church, was quick to distance himself from the sentiment.
"Our church has no involvement in this whatsoever. It's a community thing where people have met here," he told WTWO.
Jim Davis of Sullivan declared that "we shouldn't be condemning people, and that's what judgment is."
"Christ came to save the people, not to condemn them," he told WTWO. "Love them as a person. You don't have to love what they do, because the gays may not love all the mistakes you make."
Emily Butler, a junior at Sullivan High, said: "You should be able to go with whoever you want. You shouldn't be discriminated against for what you are, what you believe in."
Even Wyatt Land, a Sullivan student who said it was important to remember that "the Bible says for a man to love another woman," told WTHR that he thought gay and lesbian classmates should be welcome at the official prom.
"As long as they aren't sitting there and kissing on the dance floor and grinding on each other, stuff like that, I don't have a problem with that," he said. "I don't see what's wrong with it. Prom is for everybody. It's a high school experience."

President Barack Obama?s March trip to Israel will feature the laying of not one, not two, but three wreaths, according to a preview of his?itinerary?by YnetNews.com
In what may be the most packed wreath-laying expedition in American presidential history, President Obama will land in Israel around noon on March 20, according to the report by the Israeli online news site.
After a reception at which he will deliver a speech and a ceremony at Israeli President Shimon Peres? house, the president will proceed to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, where he will lay his first wreath in the Hall of?Remembrance.
He will then visit Mount Herzl, where he will lay his second wreath at the tomb of Theodor Herzl, the founder of the modern Zionist movement.
Afterward, President Obama will lay his final wreath in Israel. at the tomb of late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated in 1995.
Once President Obama dispatches with his wreath-laying duties, he is slated to attend more meetings, be hosted for more ceremonies and give more speeches over the next two days. He will also visit with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank town of Ramallah on the morning of March 21.
On Friday afternoon, President Obama will depart Israel for Jordan, where he will meet with Jordanian King Abdullah.
During November?s presidential campaign, President Obama was criticized by conservative pro-Israel groups for not visiting Israel during his first term in office.
It is unclear if the president plans to lay any more wreaths outside outside of Israel during his Middle East tour.

POTISKUM, Nigeria (AP) ? North Korean doctors hacked to death by machete-wielding attackers. Women vaccinating children against polio gunned down in the street. A top Islamic cleric, whose predecessors once served as ultimate rulers in the region, nearly killed in an ambush.
These recent attacks in northern Nigeria show the changing tactics of Islamic extremists here and continuing dangers facing Africa's most populous nation, despite a buildup of soldiers and police officers, door-to-door searches by security forces and mass arrests. As the killings continue, analysts believe the fighters, likely part of the amorphous Islamic sect known as Boko Haram, slip easily in and out of Nigeria to launch attacks ? putting other West African nations at risk.
"It means Nigeria's problem will become another country's problem, such as Mali, Cameroon or Niger, or smaller countries like Guinea, Burkina Faso and Senegal," wrote analyst Jacob Zenn in a January publication by the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. "Like northern Nigeria, these countries have majority Muslim populations, artificial borders, ethnic conflicts, insufficient educational and career opportunities for youths and fragile democratic institutions."
On Sunday, officials found the corpses of three North Korean doctors in Potiskum, a town in Nigeria's Yobe state, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) northeast of the nation's central capital, Abuja. Two had their throats slit, while one had been beheaded by attackers, according to an Associated Press journalist who saw the corpses at a local hospital.
Those killings came quickly after gunmen shot dead at least nine female polio vaccinators Friday in Kano, the most populous city of Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north. A previous attack on a polio clinic in October in the city killed two police officers on guard there and highlighted the continuing suspicion some in the north have regarding the vaccines. A 2003 polio outbreak in Nigeria's north that spread across the world started from Islamic leaders claiming the vaccine would sterilize young Muslim girls ? rumors that persist today in a nation that is one of three in the world where the virus remains endemic.
Despite a promise by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan that the government would protect health workers after Friday's shooting, attackers killed the North Koreans and apparently slipped away undetected Saturday night. That led to questions Monday among residents of Potiskum who wondered how safe they are, despite a dusk-till-dawn curfew in the town and soldiers on manning checkpoints there.
"It is really unfortunate this is occurring in an area with a full military and police operation," resident Abdullahi Usman said.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the killings of the doctors and health workers who "were working selflessly to provide basic life-saving interventions to the most vulnerable people," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.
The U.N. chief said these acts of "outrageous violence" are unacceptable and could have devastating effects in the fight to improve the health of people everywhere, he said.
"The secretary-general encourages all countries to protect health workers so that they can continue to better the health of populations and save lives," Nesirky said.
Yobe state spokesman Abdullahi Bego offered condolences for the dead, who were part of a technical exchange program between the state and North Korea. There are a dozen other North Korean doctors in the state, as well as engineers, according to officials.
"The Yobe state government will offer every possible support to the security agencies to track and prosecute the perpetrators of this criminal and condemnable act," Bego said in a statement. "The state government will also continue to partner the security agencies to ensure the safety of people's life and property."
There was no comment Monday from North Korea's government. Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency also had yet to report on the three doctors' deaths.
While no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks on the health workers, suspicion immediately fell on Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of northern Nigeria. The group has waged an increasingly bloody guerrilla campaign of shootings and bombings for the last year and a half. In 2012 alone, the group was blamed for killing at least 792 people, according to an AP count.
Boko Haram, which once routinely claimed its attacks, has gone largely silent, starting speculation that the sect has split into smaller groups operating independently. That makes it increasingly difficult to know who is launching assaults in the north, like the January attack on the Emir of Kano Ado Bayero. At least three people died in the shooting and Bayero, who suffered injuries in the attack, has since left Nigeria for London with family members.
The shooting shocked Muslims in the country, as the emir once ruled the caliphate governing the region and is still looked upon as a spiritual leader. It also signaled no one was beyond the extremists' violence that is sweeping across the north, as attackers have begun picking softer targets for their assaults, not just military and police.
Despite the crackdown by Nigerian security forces, it appears attackers are routinely crossing Nigeria's borders to surrounding nations to train and regroup, analysts say. Some suspected Boko Haram fighters were seen even in Mali when Islamic fighters held its north, sparking the current French military deployment to the West African nation. That indicates Boko Haram has access to international training, weapons and finance, making the group an even greater and sustained threat to the region.
"Boko Haram's connections to militants in northern Mali, the Sahel and elsewhere in the Muslim world enable it to receive and provide support to other Islamist militias," wrote terrorism analyst Zenn. "As a result, Boko Haram will be capable of surviving outside of its main base of operations ... if the Nigerian security forces drive out key leaders from Nigeria."

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli official says the government has given final approval for construction of 90 new homes in a West Bank settlement, a move that could cause tensions with the U.S. ahead of President Barack Obama?s visit to the region.
The official says the homes were first announced last year in an agreement with Jewish settlers in exchange for evacuating an unauthorized West Bank outpost. The government published its final approval on Sunday.
The official spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the media.
Anti-settlement activist Hagit Ofran says construction could begin within weeks. That means the work could coincide with Obama?s visit.
Obama has criticized settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, territories claimed by the Palestinians.

A growing body of research evidence is supporting the claim thatmeditation?is good for our health. With benefits ranging from fewer colds to pain management, meditation seems to allow people to cultivate a sense of clarity and calm that can permeate all aspects of life and that improves with practice.
Here are some of the many beneficial effects that scientists have identified in studies:
Changes in the Brain
Researchers are using modern technology to explore how meditation is able to provide these (and other) benefits. Findings confirm that meditation practice creates structural changes in the?brain, which is significant, because neuroscientists used to think the brain?s development reached a peak in adulthood and then declined with age. Research is now showing that how we use the brain impacts its development and function (just as how we use the body affects its health and function).
The structural changes in the brain that occur with meditation are associated with improved functionality: enhanced concentration, better ability to learn and remember, more ability to tolerate pain and less emotional reactivity toward external stimuli. In multiple studies, people who meditate have better attention, concentration, emotion regulation, pain tolerance and memory than those who do not.
Note:?See?www.ideafit.com/meditation-brain?for specific research findings on how meditation changes the brain.
The Fountain of Youth?
New lines of research show that meditation may lead to biological changes that decrease the inflammation response of the immune system on a cellular level and can contribute to looking and feeling younger. Two separate studies of meditation, one involving the practice of a Kirtan Kriya meditation from?kundalini yoga?and the other involving?qigong?practice, a moving meditation, both identified improved telomerase activity, which is linked to cellular health (Black et al. 2012; Ho et al. 2012).
?Telomerase is an important enzyme that protects us from aging by guarding the shortening of telomeres during cell division,? said study author Rainbow T. Ho, director of the Centre on Behavioral Health at the University of Hong Kong. This reduction in inflammation may be related to optimizing health and slowing damage from the aging process.

Black children with high levels of hormone-altering chemicals used in some shampoos and lotions are more likely to be obese, according to research published today.
?
The study by New York University scientists is the second to link phthalates to obesity in children but the first to use a large sample of children and look for racial disparities.?
Black children have much higher levels of the chemicals in their bodies than children of other races, and for every tripling of certain compounds, they were 22 percent more likely to be obese, according to data from 2,884 children aged 6 to 19. No links to obesity were found in white or Hispanic children.
?
?The takeaway is we need to consider environmental exposures when looking at the obesity problem,? said Leonardo Trasande, a professor at New York University School of Medicine and lead author of the study. ?Environmental chemicals may contribute independently of diet and exercise.?
?
Phthalates are a large family of chemicals with varied uses. The phthalates associated with black children?s obesity were the kind commonly added to personal care products to make fragrances last longer. Other phthalates are used to make vinyl and can be found in food packaging, medical devices and flooring.
?
Trasande and colleagues checked for a variety of phthalates and only found a link to the kinds used in personal care products.
?
Both Trasande and other researchers were quick to point out that this doesn?t mean phthalates cause obesity.
?
?It?s a big study and nationally representative, which is good,? said Joe Braun, an epidemiology professor at Brown University who was not involved with the research. ?But since they measure phthalates levels in urine and obesity at the same time, it?s a chicken and egg problem. Do phthalates cause obesity or are obese children more exposed?? It?s unclear, he said, when they were exposed relative to when they became obese.
?
Kathryn St. John, a senior director of product communications at The American Chemistry Council, which represents chemical manufacturers, said no conclusions can be drawn from this study about whether a significant increase in childhood obesity can be linked to phthalate exposure.
?
?Attempts to link our national obesity problem to minute exposures to chemicals found in common, everyday products are a distraction from efforts to address this important national health issue,? St. John said.
?
Previous studies have linked phthalates to hormone disruption ? including hormones responsible for fat tissue and development of the brain and reproductive system. Trasande said it?s plausible ? though not proven by this study ? that phthalates could contribute to obesity by messing with receptors that metabolize lipids and carbohydrates.
?
One previous study linked phthalates to obesity in children. High phthalate concentrations were associated with increased body mass and waist size in Hispanic and black children aged 6 to 8 in New York City. Phthalates also were linked to adult obesity in a 2007 study.?
In the new study, it is unclear why there was only a link for black children, but it could be due to their higher concentrations of the chemicals. For the personal care product-type phthalates, black children had levels 81 percent higher than white children, 45 percent higher than Mexican American children and 4 percent higher than other Hispanic children.
?
"One possibility is that different racial/ethnic groups use phthalate-containing shampoos and lotions differently, or use products containing different [phthalate] mixes," says the study, which was published online in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
?
Researchers didn?t see any differences by age groups. And, while the black children had higher levels of phthalates as a whole, the association with obesity happened at relatively low levels of exposure, Trasande said. The study used data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?s 2008 nationwide testing of chemicals in people?s bodies.
?
It?s possible black children are simply more exposed, or they metabolize the chemicals differently, said Emily Barrett, a professor at the University of Rochester who studies exposure to environmental chemicals.
Many factors ? including nutrition and stress ? could alter how different children metabolize chemicals, said Jennifer Adibi, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, San Francisco.
?
In a study released late last year by Trasande and colleagues, another hormone disrupting chemical ? bisphenol A ? was linked to obesity in only white children.?
Trasande controlled for diet, television watching, gender and age in the phthalate study. Pinning chemicals to weight gain is a challenge, but the study forces some new thinking about obesity, he said.
?
The next research step is to look at phthalate exposures from fetus to childhood to try to tease out whether the chemicals are contributing to obesity, he said.
?
Adibi said the findings are ?interesting and scary.? While it?s not enough evidence to spur policy changes, she hopes it will reframe the conversations about risks to disadvantaged communities.
?
?This is another reason to increase awareness among low income, African American and Hispanic populations and let them know they?re at an increased risk of exposure to these chemicals and that we?re seeing these associations (with obesity),? Adibi said.

BRYN MAWR, Pa. (AP) ? Rock musician and writer Patti Smith was honored by Bryn Mawr College with a medal named after the late actress Katharine Hepburn.
She received the 2013 Katharine Hepburn Medal on Thursday night in a ceremony at the women's liberal arts school in suburban Philadelphia.
Smith is recognized as a rock 'n' roll trailblazer whose work as a musician, writer, performer and visual artist influenced multiple generations. Her 1975 debut album, "Horses," is considered one of rock's greatest albums and she received the 2010 National Book Award for non-fiction for her memoir, "Just Kids."
Smith said when the college approached her about receiving the award, "I enthusiastically accepted without hesitation."
"Bryn Mawr is helping shape the futures of young women and providing them with the tools to be dominant forces in our society," she said.
Smith said her career has always been colored by the written word.
"My love of literature permeates my songs, poems and is certainly prevalent in my photography. Sometimes it may be a stylistic influence and at times a direct reference," she said in an email to The Associated Press. "I have taken photographs of Virginia Woolf's bed, Sylvia Plath's grave, Hermann Hesse's typewriter, Victor Hugo's desk. I have recently written a song and lengthy poem in homage to the great Chilean writer Roberto Bolano. My song 'My Blakean Year' gives a nod to William Blake and 'Easter' was written for Arthur Rimbaud and his siblings.
"One can find such references all through my work," she said. "Literature has always been in the center of my existence. I loved books so much that I worked in book stores right up to the recording of 'Horses.'"
College President Dr. Jane McAuliffe said Smith "conveys enormous passion and continues to transform herself throughout her artistic journey."
The college comprises 1,300 female undergraduates, two coeducational graduate schools and a coeducational pre-medical program.
The medal named after Hepburn, a Bryn Mawr alumna, honors women who change their worlds and whose work and embodies the intelligence and independence of the four-time Oscar winner.
It was awarded by the college's Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center, which memorializes Hepburn and her mother, an early feminist activist who shared the same name, with programs focusing on the arts and theatre, civic engagement, and women's health.

There are times when you need so many?business?sales leads?for you energy company, it will not matter to you what kind of businesses you end up providing power to (so long as they are legit of course). Still, such a sudden expansion into other markets and other industries can result in you finding your business sales leads among places and prospects that, well, do not look like business.
?
?
Usually the response to this is either one of two ways: blend in or stand out. But believe it or not, both can be valid for pursuing energy leads?provided that:
?
?
#1 can be a no-brainer (at least in comparison to #2). You just have to make sure that your salespeople have both themselves and the business itself in mind when they say that the corporate image of suit-and-tie fits you better than having a wardrobe of different costumes (and vice-versa). After all, playing to your strengths is one of the first things that can attract you your sales leads.
?
Now as for #2:

Do not be mistaken. You can still compromise your sales leads if you do not put equal importance on both #1 and #2. Japan said two Russian fighter jets briefly entered Japan's air space near disputed islands, prompting Japan to scramble combat fighter jets in response. Russia denied the charge

Russia, which is currently holding military manoeuvres around the disputed Kurile islands, denied any such intrusion took place.
Former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori is expected to visit Moscow later this month to discuss territorial matters.
Thursday was Japan's "Northern Territories Day", when rallies are traditionally held calling for the return of the disputed islands it calls the Northern Territories.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had told a rally he was determined to press ahead with negotiations with Russia for the return of the islands.
"I had telephone talks with President (Vladimir) Putin in December, and told him I would like to work to find a mutually acceptable solution to this last-remaining major problem between Japan and Russia," Abe said.
"The government intends to follow its basic policy of settling the territorial issue and then sign a peace treaty. We will press ahead with negotiations with strong will so that progress will be made towards the conclusive resolution of the territorial problem."
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev landed on the remote island chain in July, prompting protests from Tokyo.
Unlike Japan's dispute with China over islands in the East China Sea, which are near potentially vast maritime oil and gas reserves, the feud with Russia has more to do with the legacy of World War Two.
Soviet soldiers seized the islands at the end of the war and the territorial row has weighed on diplomatic relations ever since, precluding a formal peace treaty.
