?A Look Through the Modern Lens? at CAC

The Chesapeake Arts Center (CAC) is hosting its first photographic and video art exhibition, ?A Look Through the Modern Lens,? with an opening reception on Thursday, June 7, from 5?7 p.m., where attendees will have the chance to meet the artist.

The exhibit will run through Aug. 31 and is free and open to the public. The CAC Gallery is open Monday?Friday, 10 a.m.?6 p.m.

Leo Hylan is a photographer, video artist and performing artist whose work is a surrealistic reflection of reality. Included in the exhibit will be three videos created by Hylan.

?Everything seems brighter in the summer,? said Davina Grace Hill, executive director of CAC, ?so showcasing an artist whose work is so intense and bright at this time of year appealed to us. The idea of blending video work alongside a photographic exhibit also appealed to us.?

The Chesapeake Arts Center (CAC) is a 58,000-square-foot, multi-discipline arts facility located in Brooklyn Park, just south of Baltimore in Anne Arundel County.

Howard County Arts Council Offers Summer Camp Arts Opportunities

Space is still available in the visual and performing arts summer camps at the Howard County Arts Council (HCAC) in Ellicott City. Programs are open to the public, regardless of residency in Howard County, for grades K?7. Campers must turn five years of age minimum by Sept. 1, 2012, to be eligible.

Campers are grouped by age and may enroll for a full day or half-day. Before-care beginning at 8 a.m. and after-care until 6 p.m. is available. Students may select from age-appropriate visual and performing arts camps including Mask Mania; Stuck on Shakespeare; The Amazing Art Race; Junk to Art; Creative Construction; Underwater Galore; Broadway Bound; Mosaic Caravan; Fur, Fins & Feathers; and more.

Camps conclude with an exhibit or performance of student work on the last day of each session. HCAC employs experienced teachers who are each aided by camp assistants. Classes are limited to 20 campers.

Summer camps begin June 25 and run in one-week sessions through Aug. 17. Registration is available online at www.hocoarts.org or by phone at 410-313-2787.

black box theatre Available for Rental

The Howard County Arts Council has announced the availability of the black box theatre at the Howard County Center for the Arts for rental.

The black box theatre is an accessible 98-seat, multi-purpose performance space. While the Howard County Arts Council does use the theater for its own activities, it is primarily reserved as a rental facility for use by artists and arts groups; one-time or multiple performance dates are available.

The intimate setting and affordable fees make the theater ideally suited for instrumental, dance or vocal recitals; small music ensembles or theatrical productions; and spoken word. It is equipped with professional sound and lighting equipment, dressing rooms nearby, padded seats, black stage curtains and a sprung dance floor. A performance grand piano is also available for rental through a separate agreement with the Howard County Music Teacher?s Association.

All renters of the black box theatre are required to carry a commercial liability insurance policy of $1 million. A Laurel Fair Circa 1870 at the Laurel Museum

What did mill children of the 1870s do at a fair on their day off from working 10-hour days?

On Sunday, June 10, the Laurel Museum?s Just for Kids Sunday will highlight the kinds of activities families and children might have enjoyed with ?A Laurel Fair Circa 1870.? Participants will be able to try bean bag throws, a pie eating contest, a water balloon toss, ?fishing,? crafts and other activities.

The fair will be held on the grounds of the Laurel Museum, 817 Main Street, from 1:30?3:30 p.m. In the event of rain or excessive heat, the activities will be moved inside. Space is limited and reservations are required.

?Watercolor Visions? in the Bernice Kish Gallery

The Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House, 10400 Cross Fox Lane, Columbia, is hosting a group exhibit through Aug. 10. The artists of Sunburst Studio will exhibit their watercolors in a show entitled ?Watercolor Visions ?2012.??

Sunburst Studio, which began in 1992, is owned by Alice Webb and consists of a school of watercolor painting in her home studio and a gallery. The featured works in this exhibit were painted by the students of Sunburst Studio. Under the direction of Alice Webb, these artists have explored the many facets of watercolor painting. They are all expressions of their own personal visions in a multitude of styles.

Howard County Student Gains Top Prize in Congressional Arts Competition

Congressman Elijah E. Cummings announced Laura Ryan, a senior at Reservoir High School in Fulton, as winner of the 2012 Congressional Arts Competition for the 7th Congressional District of Maryland.

Her submission, a painting entitled ?Unity,? was selected to be displayed for one year in the Cannon tunnel to the U.S. Capitol by a panel of judges from Baltimore?s fine arts community.

Ryan also received a congressional citation and a gift certificate from Southwest Airlines. She will join Congressional Art Competition winners from across the country at a Washington, D.C., reception in their honor on June 20.

Ellicott City Historic District Photo Contest Exhibit

The Ellicott City Restoration Foundation Inc., in conjunction with the Howard County Historical Society, will present a two-month exhibit of this year?s entries in its annual Historic District Photo Contest. The exhibit will be located at the Howard County Historical Society Museum. Contest winners were announced on June 1.

The contest accepts photographs taken within the confines of the Ellicott City Historic District and awards cash prizes in three categories: an annual special category (this year it is Off the Beaten Path ? non-Main Street Historic District photos), adult (18 and over) and junior (17 and under).

Collaborative Art Exhibition to Be Held at the Eubie Blake Center

The International Center for Artistic Development (ICAD) and the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Arts Center are collaborating to produce a diverse cultural arts event at the Eubie Blake Center, 847 North Howard Street, Baltimore, on June 7?30.

Participating visual artists are: Camellia Blackwell, Van Mai, Matt Fenton, Nathaniel Gibbs, Lanre Buraimoh, Luis Peralta, Jerry Prettyman, Leah Taylor, Karen Gray, Dallin Smith, Kinya Kionoozi, Baba Harry Livingston, Tommy Roberts and Eljay McBride.

The opening reception for the event will take place on June 7 from 6?9 p.m. Mike Shellington & the Box Of Chocolates Ensemble will recite poetry, and Timmy Han, a 23-year-old Korean-American who plays jazz, blues and classical guitar, will provide music. Other Eubie Blake-affiliated musicians will be provided by The Eubie Blake Center.

Dr. Camellia Blackwell will present a Gallery Talk on ?Collecting, Protecting & Preserving Fine Art? on Sat., June 16, noon?1:30 p.m. A percentage of proceeds from the sale of artworks will be donated towards an art workshop at the Eubie Blake Summer Art Camp For Children.

The Meeting House Gallery Presents ?Color Off The Grid?

?Color Off The Grid? features the works of Maryland artists Barbara Nuss, John Petro, Chick Rhodehamel and Rhona LK Schonwald and runs until July 8. The Meeting House Gallery is located in The Oakland Mills Interfaith Center at 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia, and is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Meet the artists at the wine and cheese reception on Sunday, June 24, from 1:30?3:30 p.m., which is a celebration in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the Columbia Festival of the Arts.

Mark Ryder Original Choreography Grant Program Applications Due June 15

The Howard County Arts Council (HCAC) has extended the deadline for applications for the Mark Ryder Original Choreography Grant Program to June 15, 2012.

The program was established at the bequest of Ryder?s family, in honor of his life?s work as a dancer, choreographer and leader in the dance community, to recognize individual creative expression and to provide financial assistance to choreographers to create new original work.

The grant award recipients will be announced at HCAC?s Annual Meeting and Grant Awards Ceremony in September. The minimum grant amount will be $500.

Art at AIDA Bistro

Local artists Deborah Hoeper and Barbara Steinacker, members of Artists? Gallery in Columbia, are currently displaying pastel and watercolor paintings at AIDA Bistro & Wine Bar.

The show runs through the end of June, and a reception and happy hour to meet the artists will be held on June 11 from 4?5:30 p.m. at AIDA Bistro, 6741 Columbia Gateway Drive in Columbia.

Hoeper paints abstract watercolor landscapes and creates contrast through subtle color changes rather than changes of value. Her paintings are based on an emotional reaction to the landscape.

Steinacker specializes in pastel landscapes and portraits. Of her landscapes, she said, ?My intention is to record my experience of the beauty of a location; I share with the viewer my feeling of peace and tranquility.?

Artists? Gallery Welcomes Summer With a ?Buy Local: Art!? Show for June

The Artists? Gallery joins the Columbia Festival of the Arts and Lakefest 2012 in celebrating local artists with an all-member, all-media ?buy local? art show that runs through June 29.

At a reception on Friday, June 15, guests can enjoy refreshments while watching several gallery artists demonstrate their media and techniques between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. The gallery also will be open on Saturday, June 16, from 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday, June 17, from 12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Columbia Orchestra Wrapping Its Season Al Fresco

The Columbia Orchestra will conclude its 2011?2012 season on Wednesday, June 27, with a free outdoor concert at Centennial Park as part of the Sunset Serenade series. The concert will begin at 7 p.m.

Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and enjoy music from Hollywood blockbuster films, classic Beatles songs and other pops classics including Tchaikovsky?s 1812 Overture.
