Teen charged as adult in killing of Colorado girl

By NBC News staff and wire services

GOLDEN, Colo. -- A teen who allegedly confessed to the dismemberment killing of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway also sexually assaulted the Colorado girl, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Police say they arrested Austin Reed Sigg in connection with Jessica Ridgeway's death.

Austin Sigg, 17, was charged Tuesday as an adult with 17 counts in the Ridgeway case and in an attack on a jogger. They include four murder charges, kidnapping and sexual assault on a child.

Sigg didn't speak during the brief court hearing in Golden, Colo., and didn't look at his six relatives in the courtroom, including his mother, Mindy Sigg.?His relatives sat silently as the charges were read, unlike a hearing last week at which Sigg's mother sobbed audibly. She was the one who called police on her son.

Family members of the slain child?also watched the proceedings. Each wore purple, the?girl's favorite color.

Defense attorneys anticipate asking the judge to send the case to juvenile court. If convicted as an adult, Sigg faces up to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. If he is tried as a juvenile, Sigg faces a maximum of seven years on each conviction, which, if ordered to be served consecutively, would put him in prison for decades.?

Prosecutors said Sigg acted alone in kidnapping, robbing and sexually assaulting Ridgeway. The robbery charge involved the girl's backpack and water bottle, which were found in another suburb three days after she disappeared while walking to school Oct. 5.

"Austin Reed Sigg unlawfully and feloniously, acting alone, committed sexual assault, and in the course of or in furtherance of that crime, caused the death of Jessica Ridgeway," according to court documents.

He is also charged in an attempted?abduction of a 22-year-old woman near the girl's home months before the Ridgeway killing.?Police said the jogger reported being grabbed from behind by a man who placed a rag with a chemical smell over her mouth. Police have not revealed whether the rag was soaked with a chemical meant to subdue the woman.

Police arrested Sigg on Oct. 23. His mother told The Associated Press that she called police and her son turned himself in.?

Ridgeway?lived on a quiet street about a mile from where Sigg lived with his mother. The subdivision features an elementary school, a high school, small parks, greenbelts, open space and a lake.

Sigg is being held without bond at a youth correctional facility. The charges filed were four counts of murder, two counts of kidnapping, sexual assault on a child and robbery in Jessica's abduction and slaying, as well as attempted murder, attempted sexual assault and attempted second-degree kidnapping in the attack on the runner. Prosecutors also charged Sigg with six counts of crime of violence.

"There's DNA evidence, and the evidence is overwhelming," prosecutor Hal Sargent said, arguing that Sigg should be held without bail despite having no criminal record.

Prosecutors say Colorado teen has confessed to Jessica Ridgeway slaying

Former high school classmates painted a picture of the 5-foot-6, 160-pound Sigg as an intelligent teen who often wore black and complained about school but who would stay late sometimes to work on computers. Sigg was interested in mortuary science and was taking forensics classes, according to classmates.

Sigg enrolled in August at Arapahoe Community College, which offers the state's only accredited mortuary science program. The school said Sigg didn't have enough credits yet to apply to that program.

Sigg had left Standley Lake High School in July after finishing the 11th grade and later earned a GED. School officials said they didn't know why he left.?Former schoolmate Sarah Morevec said Sigg had been bullied for having a high voice.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

Toshiba Q2 results: profit of $722 million, whole-year forecast cut by $500 million

Toshiba Q2 results profit of $722 million, wholeyear forecast cut by $500 million

Toshiba has managed to pick itself up this quarter, recording $17.8 billion in sales, making for an operating profit of $722 million over the past three months. The "social infrastructure" segments recorded a healthy profit ($518 million), while income from digital products, home appliances and electronic devices fell due lower than expected demand. Forecasts for the year have been cut for the full year by approximately $500 million to $3.26 billion, as Toshiba expects lowers sales and operating profits due to the uncertain global economic situation. Individual segments are expected to continue their distinct trends, with the social infrastructure business pulling in more while its other arms bear the brunt of the economic slowdown.

MetroPCS breaks 1 million LTE subscribers, makes a $193 million profit in Q3 2012

MetroPCS might be the smaller of the two parties in the proposed merger with T-Mobile, but it certainly knows how to coin a profit in difficult times. The carrier recorded a massive $193 million net profit this quarter, $44 million more than the $149 million it made in Q2, despite losing 312,000 subscribers in the three month period. The reason behind the rosy numbers was a combination of cash-saving exercises and canny investments in securities, pushing total revenue to $1.3 billion. The network now has just under nine million customers, with more than a million of those subscribing to one of the company's LTE packages. It's also managed to reduce churn down to 3.7 percent, a reduction of 0.8 percent since Q3 2011. CEO Roger D. Linquist remarked that the next quarter will see the business "re-energize" subscriber growth at the expense of its bottom line -- probably wise, given that it's lost just over half a million customers in the last six months.

Millions in Northeast struggle after massive storm

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The northeastern United States battled epic flood waters and lengthy power outages on Tuesday after the massive storm Sandy pummeled the coast with a record storm surge, high winds and heavy rains that killed at least 45 people and caused billions of dollars in losses.

Millions of people in New York City and other hard-hit areas will spend days or weeks recovering from a storm already seen as far more destructive that Hurricane Irene, which slammed into the same region a year ago. One disaster modeling company said Sandy may have caused up to $15 billion in insured losses.

The storm killed 18 people in New York City, among 23 total in New York state, while six died in New Jersey. Seven other states reported fatalities.

Some 8.2 million homes and businesses in several states were without electricity as trees toppled by Sandy's fierce winds took down power lines.

Sandy hit the coast with a week to go to the November 6 presidential election and turned its fury inland with heavy snowfall, dampening an unprecedented drive to encourage early voting and raising questions whether some polling stations will be ready to open on Election Day.

New York City will struggle without its subway system, which was inundated and will remain shut for days. Much of the Wall Street district was left underwater but officials hoped to have financial markets reopen on Wednesday.

Sandy was the biggest storm to hit the country in generations when it crashed ashore with hurricane-force winds on Monday near the New Jersey gambling resort of Atlantic City, devastating the Jersey Shore tourist haven. Flood waters lifted parked cars and deposited them on an otherwise deserted highway.

With the political campaign and partisanship on hold, Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie planned to tour New Jersey disaster areas on Wednesday.

"It's total devastation down there. There are boats in the street five blocks from the ocean," said Peter Sandomeno, an owner of the Broadway Court Motel in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey.

Christie, who has been a strong supporter of Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney, praised Obama and the federal response to the storm.

Obama and Romney put campaigning on hold for a second day but Romney planned to hit the trail again in Florida on Wednesday and Obama seemed likely to resume campaigning on Thursday for a final five-day sprint to Election Day.

Obama faces political danger if the government fails to respond well, as was the case with predecessor George W. Bush's botched handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Obama has a chance to show that his administration has learned the lessons of Katrina and that he can lead during a crisis.

NEW YORK UNDER WATER

Sandy brought a record storm surge of almost 14 feet to downtown Manhattan, well above the previous record of 10 feet during Hurricane Donna in 1960, the National Weather Service said.

The storm forced New York City to postpone its traditional Halloween parade, which had been set for Wednesday night in Greenwich Village and threatened to disrupt Sunday's New York City marathon.

The lower half of Manhattan went dark when surging seawater flooded a substation and as power utility Consolidated Edison shut down others pre-emptively. Some 250,000 customers lost power.

Fire ravaged the Breezy Point neighborhood in the borough of Queens, destroying 110 homes and damaging 20 while destroying still more in the nearby neighborhood of Belle Harbor. Remarkably, no fatalities were reported.

"To describe it as looking like pictures we've seen of the end of World War Two is not overstating it," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said after touring the area. "The area was completely leveled. Chimneys and foundations were all that was left of many of these homes."

Hospitals closed throughout the region, forcing patients to relocate and doctors to carry premature babies down more than a dozen flights of stairs at one New York City facility.

While some parts of the city went unscathed, neighborhoods along the East and Hudson rivers bordering Manhattan were underwater and expected to be without power for days, as were low-lying streets in Battery Park near Ground Zero, where the World Trade Center stood before the September 11, 2001, attacks.

"I'm lucky to have gas; I can make hot water. But there is no heating and I'm all cold inside," said Thea Lucas, 87, who lives alone in Manhattan's Lower East Side.

DESTRUCTION THROUGHOUT REGION

Airlines canceled more than 18,000 flights, though two of the New York City area's three major airports planned to reopen with limited service on Wednesday.

Cellphone service went silent in many states and some emergency call centers were affected.

Some cities like Washington, Philadelphia and Boston were mostly spared but he storm reached as far inland as Ohio and parts of West Virginia were buried under 3 feet (1 meter) of snow, a boon for ski resorts that was one of the storm's few bright spots.

The western extreme of Sandy's wind field buffeted the Great Lakes region, according to Andrew Krein of the National Weather Service, generating wind gusts of up to 60 mph on the southern end of Lake Michigan and up to 35 mph Chicago.

In Cleveland, buildings in the city's downtown area were evacuated due to flooding, police said. Winds gusting to 50 mph brought down wires and knocked out power to homes and business. City officials asked residents to stay inside and for downtown businesses to remained closed for the day.

Amid the devastation there was opportunity. Snowmakers at Snowshoe Mountain in the mountains of West Virginia had their equipment running at full speed on Tuesday, taking advantage of the cold temperatures to build the 24-30 inch base they need to open for skiing by Thanksgiving.

"There are snowmakers out there making snow in what was a hurricane and blizzard," said Dave Dekema, marketing director for the resort, which received a foot-and-a-half of snow, with another foot or two expected.

The resort's phones, email account and Facebook pages were "going crazy," Dekema said, with avid skiers and snowboarders wondering if there was any chance of getting out on the mountain this weekend. He said that was unlikely.

Breast Cancer Screening Keeps Women Alive Regardless Of Over ...

Breast Cancer Screenings Saves Lives Despite DebateBreast cancer screenings can save lives despite the argument that over diagnosis causes problems which may have never existed in some women, Reuters reports.

An independent review released on breast cancer screenings was released by the?The Lancet medical journal and commissioned by?Cancer Research UK?(CRUK) and Britain?s Department of Health. An intense debate in the international health community about routine screening benefits, arguing it does more harm than good, is what initiated the research project.

It has been argued that routine screenings can subject some women to radiotherapy, unnecessary surgery, and medication in order to treat cancers which would have posed no threat in the beginning.

The chief executive of CRUK,?Harpal Kumar, said there are some shortcomings in routine screening but also said that until breast cancer monitoring becomes more sophisticated, it?s the best option:

?Screening remains one of the best ways to spot the very early signs of breast cancer, at a stage when treatment is most likely to be successful.?Yet, as the review shows, some cancers will be diagnosed and treated that would never have caused any harm.?

According to a panel of experts from?University College London, lead by?professor Sir Michael Marmot, screening can prevent?1,300 deaths annually in Britain, but also can cause about 4,000 women to receive treatment for conditions that would never have afflicted them.

So it boils down to this-every one death averted, three women will be over-treated.

Improved breast cancer screening information is called for by the review panel, giving women a better understanding about both the potential benefits and harms of having a mammogram.

LG Nexus 4 outed on video by carrier in Sweden

Nexus 4 by LG

And here we have another video of the LG Nexus 4, which might or might not be announced today. Looks like this one comes from Three in Sweden. As it so happens, we've got a Swede on staff (more than one, now that we think about it).

The video talks up the beautiful, thin design of the "Nexus 4 by LG." It mentions the power button on the right-hand side, and the volume and micro SIM on the left. (Nothing we couldn't tell by watching, of course.) "Here is the familiar pure Android interface," it continues. Folders, main menu. Fast web browsers, high-resolution screen.

Also mentioned is the status bar, with "easily accessible settings." And, indeed, there are quick settings, though different than we might have expected.

Update: And the video's been pulled, as we figured it would.

Thanks, Dennis!

Employee needs help: What can we do? ? Business Management ...

Q. Can we suggest psychiatric help for an employee we suspect may be having trouble with substance abuse? And can we require a random drug test?

A. Suggesting psychiatric help could be viewed as akin to requesting a medical examination, in which case it can be done only if it is for job-related reasons and is a business necessity. Suggesting psychiatric help could also support a claim that you perceived the employee to have a mental disability.

Refer the employee to your Employee Assistance Program (if you have one), or ask if you can provide any assistance. If the employee admits to a substance abuse problem, you could suggest a rehabilitation facility.

You can require a random drug test, but you should do so in the context of a drug testing policy. The policy should state the company?s prohibition on being under the influence of drugs or alcohol during work.

Huawei Honor 2 unveiled Quadcore 14GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 45inch 326 PPI display

Never one to stop unfurling new smartphones, Huawei's just detailed yet another high-end Android handset. The Honor 2 packs the company's in-house K3V2 1.4GHz quad-core chip, up from the single-core found in the original, alongside 2GB of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage. Around the back, there's the BSI 8-megapixel camera sensor, capable of burst shots and full 1080p video capture, while Huawei has also included a microSD slot for storage expansion. With a 4.5-inch 1,280 x 720 display, there's hefty pixel bump up from the 245 pixels per inch found on the first Honor -- in fact we have a Retina display-matching 326ppi. The Chinese phone maker is also talking up its claims of 72 hours of standby time, which is something we'd certainly like to try out when review samples eventually appear. Pre-orders will start in China later this week, with the Honor 2 priced up at 1,888 yuan -- just over $300.

Sandy leaves unprecedented challenges for New York City subways

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The giant storm Sandy wreaked havoc on the New York City subway system, flooding tunnels, garages and rail yards and threatening to paralyze the nation's largest mass-transit system for days.

"The New York City subway system is 108 years old, but it has never faced a disaster as devastating as what we experienced last night," Joseph Lhota, the chairman of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, said in a statement early on Tuesday.

He later said that water was "literally up to the ceiling" at one downtown station.

All seven subway tunnels running under the East River from Manhattan to Queens and Brooklyn took in water, and any resulting saltwater damage to the system's electrical components will have to be cleaned - in some cases off-site - before the system can be restored, MTA spokeswoman Deirdre Parker said on Tuesday.

At dawn, emergency crews were assessing the damage to tunnels and elevated tracks. Restoring the system is likely to be a gradual process, Parker said.

"It's really hard to say which areas will come back first," she said, adding it will likely be a combination of limited subway and bus service. "It will come back gradually."

It could be four to five days before subway service resumes, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg told a news conference on Tuesday. As for buses, the city is hoping to resume limited service on Tuesday and full service on Wednesday, he said.

About 5.3 million people use the city's subway system on weekdays. The system, which runs around the clock, comprises 21 subway routes linked by 468 stations, and stretches across 660 miles of track.

The MTA's Metro North Railroad lost power on its suburban Hudson and New Haven lines, while there was flooding in an East River tunnel used by the Long Island Rail Road, the agency said.

New Jersey's PATH commuter train service, which connects New Jersey with New York City, will likely remain suspended for at least a week to 10 days, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said.

New York City closed down subway, bus and commuter train systems on Sunday night - a full day before Sandy, one of the biggest storms to ever hit the United States, made landfall on Monday night in neighboring New Jersey.

Sandy was especially imposing because of its wide-ranging winds. The storm brought a record storm surge of almost 14 feet to downtown Manhattan, well above the previous record of 10 feet during Hurricane Donna in 1960, the National Weather Service said.

O2 reportedly secures Nexus 4 exclusivity in the UK

    Android Central

O2 UK will be the only British network to offer the recently announced LG Nexus 4, according to reports. UK tech blog Pocket-Lint says O2 has secured a one-month exclusivity period, meaning customers wanting to use one on another network will have to pick it up online via the Google Play Store, or wait until mid-December when other networks will be given a crack at it.

O2 and LG are said to have partnered to give away free LG TVs to the first hundred Nexus 4 buyers in the UK. And as with its iPhone 5 launch, O2 will reportedly be erecting a pop-up store on top of the O2 Arena in London, where customers will be able to buy the phone on launch day (assuming paying Google to deliver one on the 13th is just too convenient for you).

O2 will be hoping to generate some positive buzz form its exclusive Nexus launch, as it's recently suffered a couple of major network outages. If nothing else, O2's exclusivity bid proves that the Nexus name still holds weight with some carriers around the world.

Dacia Duster 1 Romanian budget SUV the Dacia Duster racks up 1,000 pre orders in the UKDespite not being available to test drive, let alone buy, for three months, the Dacia Duster has totted up over 1,000 pre-orders in the UK in just 100 days. The big pull appears to be the low price compared to other SUVs on the market. With a starting price of GBP 8,995, which is described as ?shockingly affordable? in the UK automotive press, the budget SUV is proving a hit across the UK.

The Dacia Duster won the Scottish Car of the Year award and orders in Scotland and Wales are currently ahead of those in England. Several different specifications will be available including petrol and diesel, 2WD and 4WD and from a 1.6 liter engine up to a 2.0 liter version, priced from GBP 8,995 for the entry level model up to GBP 14,995 for the highest spec Duster.

Dacia owner Renault has indicated that currently the most orders have been received for the highest specification model. The right hand drive Dacia Duster for the UK market is to be produced in India, where some 20,000 orders have been received so far.

Hurricane Sandy liveblog: What the storm portends for Washington, DC

AccuWeather.com meteorologists expect wind gusts in the neighborhood of 60 to 80 mph in the city with the greatest frequency of high gusts on the Eastern Shore and Atlantic coast beaches.

Here?s what AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist?Alex Sosnowski is saying about the damage and disruptions Hurricane Sandy is likely to bring to the Washington, D.C area:

Conditions will deteriorate into Sunday night with the height of the storm Monday into Tuesday.

At this time AccuWeather.com meteorologists expect wind gusts in the neighborhood of 60 to 80 mph in the city with the greatest frequency of high gusts on the Eastern Shore and the Atlantic coast beaches.

Gusts this strong will down trees, power lines, send loose objects airborne and loosen panes of glass in tall buildings. Walking through city streets will be difficult and dangerous. Avoid walking or parking under trees. Large branches can come down with no notice.

A general 2 to 4 inches of rain will fall with locally higher amounts on the Eastern Shore and in the mountains to the west. Enough rain will fall in the local area to bring flash, urban and small stream flooding.

The full moon Monday will amplify tide levels, but the track of and wind flow around Sandy will not?push water northward up the Chesapeake Bay like Isabel did.

Sandy is forecast by AccuWeather.com to make landfall in New Jersey. However, since this will be such a large storm in terms of surface area, effects will be more than a hurricane hitting a small area.

There will be major impact due to wind and flooding, not only in the Washington-Baltimore, area, but as far north as New York City into portions of New England and as far south as eastern North Carolina.

It is possible the New York metro area experiences the worst of the storm in terms of storm surge flooding and wind damage, because of the angle and location of the storm striking the coast.

    Sunday Oct. 28 9:00 a.m.

    From WNYC in New York:

As Hurricane Sandy spun up the East Coast, residents of some flood-prone areas in the tri-state region were told Saturday to evacuate and transit officials in New York City prepared for the unusual step of shutting down service.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an order telling the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to prepare for possibly shutting down all service on subways, buses and commuter rail lines. A decision on whether to cut off service is to be made Sunday.

"Suspending the largest transportation system in North America is a monumental effort, and it is imperative that we start the process before we make a final decision, and before the worst of Hurricane Sandy reaches us," MTA Chairman and CEO Joseph J. Lhota said in a statement.

When the MTA halted service during Hurricane Irene in August 2011 it was the first such weather-related shutdown in the agency's history.

Hurricane Sandy has been making its way toward the eastern seaboard, and could combine with a storm system from the west and cold air from Canada to bring heavy rains and strong winds Monday and Tuesday. The severity of this rare convergence was unclear Saturday.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said there were no evacuation orders in effect for the city. But he said shelters will be opened in 65 public schools on Sunday for residents of low-lying areas who are concerned that their homes may be affected by flooding or power outages.

'Beam me to my meeting:' Video conferencing much improved

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Forget about crackly lines or blurry webcams. Video conferencing has just got a whole lot better. By combining robotics, video and a host of other sensor and display technologies, European scientists can now virtually 'beam' you to locations on the other side of the globe. It may sound like science fiction, but this new approach can make it feel like you are really 'there'!

Teleconferences, video conferencing and web exchanges have become the norm for most multinational businesses. But nobody really likes it; nothing beats meeting people face-to-face.

'When we meet people in the flesh we can pick up on subtle cues -- facial expressions, quirks, who is looking at who,' explains Stephen Dunne from Starlab in Spain. 'There is so much non-verbal communication that you miss, even with the highest quality video conferencing technology. You can't shake hands or decide to look around the room, for example.'

Working in an EU-funded research project, scientists from across Europe have now combined a set of digital technologies that could effectively transport someone into a meeting room on the other side of the world. For the first time ever people have been able to shake hands on a deal, separated by thousands of miles.

Of course there is no teleportation involved, but the 'Beaming through augmented media for natural networked gatherings' (Beaming) project uses immersive virtual reality techniques and technologies to make you feel like you are actually somewhere else. In that 'somewhere else', you are embodied by your avatar -- a real-life robot, for example -- which becomes your eyes, ears and mouth.

As the Beaming 'traveller' you are rigged up with multiple sensors and have your head covered in a full head-mounted display. Yet that display means you see and hear what your robotic-self can see through its video camera eyes and microphone ears -- and you can respond just as you would if you were really there. If you move your head, the robot's head moves the same way; if you speak, the robot talks with your voice. Movement sensors on your arms detect how they move and the robot's arms match these actions. And if someone touches the robot's hands, this pressure is relayed back to pressure pads on your hand.

The technology has been demonstrated in a groundbreaking interview between a project scientist in Spain and a BBC journalist in University College London. The journalist was able to interview the scientist and even 'high five' them at the end of the demonstration.

    Today's technology, tomorrow's market?

'What we have achieved here is a real demonstration of what can be done with the technologies we have available to us today,' remarks Mr Dunne, project manager for Beaming. 'We took "off-the-shelf" products and combined them in this unusual way. This is not a breakthrough in technology development, but is certainly a breakthrough in demonstrating the powerful ways in which media can be networked to achieve amazing things.'

One of the biggest tasks for the Beaming partners has been to develop a framework data architecture for the system; this defines how all the visual, audio, motion and pressure data is packaged and transmitted between the traveller and their remote environment. It also establishes how the 3D model of the remote location is generated for the 'traveller' to create a strong sense of presence for them. 'The purpose of the framework is to make Beaming entirely independent of the hardware or software involved,' explains Mr Dunne. 'You'll be able to use any robot or any sensor, for example. We have also tried to define the minimum amount of data you need but still make the Beaming experience fully immersive.'

    Emotional clues

Although head-mounted displays, pressure pads and 3D graphical interfaces can give you a real sense of being elsewhere, what is it like for people at the other end, those sitting around a table, for example, having to interact with your avatar? Talking to a robot who talks like you could be quite unnerving!

'It was important for us to make the interaction as natural as possible. Whether people are interacting with a robot or some kind of virtual avatar, we want the experience to feel natural and not get in the way of normal communication,' says Mr Dunne.

One simple improvement was to give the robot a more expressive head. The team replaced its robot's mechanical eyes and mouth with an LCD display. 'We used graphics for the eyes and mouth; they look much more natural. People seem to relax more if they can look a robot in the eye and the eyes look right. It is easier to forget that they are dealing with a machine!' says Mr Dunne.

Research still continues to investigate how data about the Beaming traveller's physiological and emotional state could be recorded and relayed to the people in the remote location. The project has experimented to see how the traveller's heart rate, facial expressions and even brain waves could be clues to their emotional state. So far, technology can be trained to use these signals to recognise basic emotional states, for example differentiate between relaxed and stress. The challenge now is to work out how to communicate their signals to everyone else through the avatar.

Is travel a thing of the past?

'We are not claiming that Beaming will revolutionise meetings or save the world millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide because people won't need to travel anymore,' Mr Dunne stresses, 'but we do think this idea of "beaming" individuals to locations where they can move and interact through a robot could really work for some very specific applications initially.'

'It is ideal if you want to transport a person with specific skills or knowledge to another location,' Mr Dunne continues. 'It gives that person total physical immersion in their remote location. They can touch and interact with their remote environment. We think it might work for top surgeons who could "beam" into operating theatres all over the world and share their expertise and knowledge, even perform operations.

'As a project, our inspiration was strictly to demonstrate that this kind of virtual travel and interaction could be done. Now it is the job of individual partners to translate this into the real world and real products. We are moving from the realm of scientific curiosity and looking at services we could offer.'

The Beaming project received EUR 9.2 million (of total EUR 12.4 million project budget) in research funding under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

    Armor and Weaponry

    The Dohvin Tree

The World Tree is dying, and all the world is descending into chaos. Are there still heroes left who will be able to stand and fight to prevent the promised apocalypse of legends?

There are a multitude of weapon and armor types in this RP and they will be listed here for you. Not everything is shown, such as combinations of types and whatnot as I'd like that to be up to you. However, try to keep things generally uniform. If you're going to have your character wear light armor, don't give them a heavy Steel helmet, a light leather chest plate, one heavy boot and one light boot. Know what I mean? Keep it simple and uniform, thank you.

If there is anything you'd like to discuss about the weapons and armor, feel free to use this thread to ask all your questions or address your concerns. Notice that some of the materials in the armor sections are listed twice. That is because they can be forged into both light and heavy armor sets. Similarly, almost all the different weapons can be crafted out of these different materials, Leather being the only exception since it's armor exclusive.

    Have fun!

    Armor Types:

    Heavy Armor

Chest Plate - covers upper torso both front and back
Gloves - gloves are hardened and stiff which make for great cqc and cover the arms from the elbow down
Boots - Boots are heavy and strong and cover the legs from the top of the knee down
    Helmet - Head covering

    Types of Heavy Armor Materials:

Iron, Steel, Orcish, Ebony, Dwarven, Daedric

    Light Armor

Chest - covers the upper torso on the front only and is light and flexible
Back - covers the back of the upper torso and connects to the Chest
Gloves - lightly armored gloves covering the arm from the elbow down
Boots - light armor boots from the bottom of the knee down
Thighs - Covering for the thighs both front and back (optional)
Shoulder - covers the shoulders both front and back where the back plate does not (optional)
Helmet - light helmet with larger opening for the eyes and nose

    Types of Light Armor Materials

Leather, Bronze, Iron, Steel, Glass, Elven, Lunar, Solar

    The Many Weapons of Dohvin

(Almost all weaponry can be dual wielded save for two handed weapons and the bows or crossbows)

Sword - Comes in two basic sizes: one handed and two handed. One handed swords typically have a three to three and a half foot blade, excluding the handle, while the two handed swords have a blade up to five or six feet long, excluding the handle.

Daggers - Come in a myriad of lengths and shapes depending on the fighting style and preferences of the user.

Mace - Usually comes in the shape of a barbed circle, though bladed maces can also provide the user with some unique and variable options in combat.

Ball and Chain - This weapon is highly unpredictable and very, very difficult to master due to its chaotic nature and function.

Bow and Arrow - Comes in three forms: Long bow (for extra long range), Dynamic Bow (for normal range but extra power), Crossbow (for close encounters)

Bo Staff - Comes in two distinct forms, Bo and Three Point. The Bo is the traditional staff, while the Three Point separates into three sections which can each be used as a weapon unto itself.

Combat Sticks - Sticks made out of a very hard wood used in close quarters combat. Typically comes in pairs.

Spear - Comes in two forms, Long Spear and the traditional Spear. Long Spears have a long but very light chain attached to the end so the spear can be thrown and retrieved by use of the chain.

Javelin - A variation of the Long Spear which is slightly more streamlined and can be used in either long or short ranged combat. Does not have the chain for retrieval.

Axe - Comes in Battle Axe (single bladed two handed), Axe (single bladed, one handed), Hatchet (single bladed, used as a throwing weapon) and Bladed Axe (double bladed, two handed)

Claws - Crafted in a myriad of shapes and forms to suit the users needs in combat or any other practical use such as mountain climbing.

Throwing Darts - Come in a myriad of forms to suit the users needs in combat from stars to darts.

Whips - Crafted with a myriad of different forms and ends to suit different needs in combat.
