?One in six people worldwide do not have safe drinking water.?
?$1,000 gives clean water to 3 families in Rwanda.?
?People in Africa spend 40 billion hours walking for water every single year.?
These are just some of the facts participants will learn Saturday at York College Environmental Society?s Walk4Water. Starting at 10 a.m., participants will walk about one and a half miles, while learning facts about the water crisis in Rwanda, said society president Eileen Reavey. Music will entertain participants during registration on the main campus outside the Collegiate Performing Arts Center. After the event free food donated by York College Dining Services will be offered in addition to musical entertainment. Parking is free on campus on the weekends.
The club hopes to raise $5,000 through charity:water, a nonprofit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing countries. Reavey said the suggested donation is $5, but if participants just want to walk, that is fine, too. Donations can be made at the event with cash or check, or by visiting www.mycharitywater.org/walk4waterycp.
Here is what Reavey had to say in an email message:
YES is all about giving back, even if it?s not directly related to an environmental cause. After being a club for the last two years, we decided it was time to broaden our reach beyond York County. As the current president I proposed this idea at the end of last year and club members were completely on board with it! Personally this is my favorite cause (and favorite charity) so that was the main reason I chose it.
I (Bethany) think providing fresh water is an environmental cause, too. Diseases from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation causes many deaths a year, and some of that is because of pollution. Providing clean, safe drinking water is a catalyst for healthy lives and healthy, clean communities.
