Bridge building in Chilliwack prepares military for natural disasters

About 200 Canadian Army Reserve Combat Engineers and support personnel from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario were at Cultus Lake and the surrounding Chilliwack area for four days of training during Exercise Paladin Response 2012 from Dec. 27-30.

The exercises included building and disassembling two different types of land bridges ? medium girder bridges and Acrow bridges which are used to span gaps ? plus medium rafts (aka medium floating bridges). After the bridges and rafts are constructed, the soldiers drive and transport military trucks across the structures.

The main focus for the exercises is to be able to use these bridges and rafts for natural disasters here in Canada, although they can and have been used overseas.

There were a number of local British Columbian soldiers from 39 Combat Engineer Regiment's three units: 54 Engineer Squadron in Chilliwack, 6?Engineer Squadron in North Vancouver, and 44?Engineer Squadron in Trail.

Guantanamo 11th Anniversary Protests: Londoners Demonstrate Outside U.S. Embassy

LONDON (AP) ? Dozens of activists have staged a protest outside the U.S. Embassy in London to mark 11 years since the opening of the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo.

About 50 protesters, some wearing orange jumpsuits and masks of President Barack Obama or a dark sack around their heads, turned out for the peaceful demonstration in central London.

The activists called for the release of Shaker Aamer, the last British resident still held at the prison. Aamer, originally from Saudi Arabia, was detained in Afghanistan in 2001 and has been held at Guantanamo since 2002. He has not been charged and has insisted he was in Afghanistan to do voluntary work.

Obama promised when he took office to close the prison but congressional opposition has prevented him from fulfilling that vow.

Mikashevichi Granit Plant increases revenue and profitability ...

Mikashevichi Granit Plant increases revenue and profitability.

This was stated in the State Control Committee today. This government agency carried out an inspection of the plant being in deep crisis in 2008, thus revealing the company's potential as the object of strategic importance to the Belarusian economy. Today "Granit" is a modern plant with many hopes put on it.

By Alexander Savenko: According to experts, to understand the importance of granite as the strategic product, it is important to know at least the basics of its production. The mine extends for more than 20 kilometers and is 132 meters deep. The base of high-quality gravel is produced here.
(Mikhail Poukh, Deputy Chief of the "Mikashevichi" mine of the "Granit" Plant)
Gennady Kuchinski has been in his profession for more than 19 years.
(Gennady Kuchinski, driver of the excavator)
Then the fossil is transported to the crushing and screening plant.
(Sergei Mikhailov, Head of the crushing and screening plant of "Granit")
Today the Belarusian granite is bought by the Baltic countries, Poland, Russia and Ukraine. However, it is mostly goes to the domestic market primarily due to the requirements of the Belarusian construction industry. The demand for gravel each year is growing. Therefore, an additional line of processing equipment was introduced last year. This is the fifth line of the crushing and screening plant. This year, it is planned to produce 3 million tons of gravel, meeting the European standards.
The large-scale modernization of "Granit" started long ago. The turning point was in 2008. The situation was difficult. The State Control Committee conducted inspections and revealed the company's potential. A new production line was introduced, the old workshops were reequipped.
(Vyacheslav Bychkovsky, Head of the State Control Committee of the Brest region)
Still, the company has some problems requiring a serious approach. For example, "Granit" plans to discover a new deposit.
(Valery Batura, Chief Engineer of "Granit")
But this requires appropriate funding. According to the State Control Committee, the major part will be financed by the state since losing the strategically important plant unique for Belarusian industry is at least unreasonable.

Twisted! Wendy's offers a pretzel-esque burger bun

Instagram user dez_flocka_bell (used with permission)

Wendy's is testing a pretzel cheeseburger topped with bacon. Social media feedback has been positive.

By Ben Popken, TODAY contributor

Continuing to try to cement its reputation as selling a better class of burger, Wendy's is selling a bacon cheeseburger that sits on a pretzel-esque bun.

Judging by some of the photos and comments posted on social media, mainly from users that appear to be in the Miami Florida area, the buns are beefier and thicker than the usual patty bread. The tops of the buns feature a cross split, similar to what you might find on a Swiss or German-style pretzel bun.

Reached for comment, Wendy's?Senior Vice President of Communications Denny Lynch said that it was Wendy's policy not to comment on test products.

During an investor meeting this summer, Wendy's executives discussed exploring using pretzel buns on a "pub club" type sandwich. Wendy's would be selling ""five star quality breads at three-star pricing," Gerard Lewis, head of innovation at Wendy's, told the conference.

Though it appears to only be launched in a small test market, the possibility of a Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger would mark the latest "fast food innovation" to come out lately as brands fight for mind, and stomach, share.

In 2010, KFC launched the Double Down, with two pieces of chicken as the sandwich "buns" enclosing two strips of bacon and special sauce. That same year, Burger King unveiled the "Pizza Burger," an over-sized burger pie draped in mozzarella, pepperoni, and pesto and marinara sauce. Likewise, in 2010 Friendly's came out with Grilled Cheese Burger Melt, in which two grilled cheese sandwiches were used as the buns for a burger.

Savage killing, sex at heart of Ariz. murder trial

PHOENIX (AP) ? The photographs present a chilling portrait of sex and death.

A nude Jodi Arias on Travis Alexander's bed. A naked Alexander in the shower. Then minutes later, an image of Alexander stabbed and slashed nearly 30 times in the heart, back, hands and torso, shot in the head, his throat slit from ear to ear.

Other evidence has stacked up since the June 2008 attack in Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix. A bloody palm print; wildly conflicting stories; and, finally, a confession.

The evidence ? including time-stamped photos from the day police say Alexander died ? is being presented at a trial in Phoenix that's been dominated by the torrid affair, sex, jealousy and a defendant whose only chance at acquittal is to convince a jury she's the victim.

There's no question who killed the 30-year-old businessman and motivational speaker. Arias admits she stabbed and shot him, but claims she was defending herself against an abusive lover.

Alexander "lunged at Jodi in anger," her attorney, Jennifer Willmott, told jurors.

"Jodi's life was in danger. He knocked her to the ground in the bathroom where there was a struggle," Willmott said. "If she did not have to defend herself, she would not be here."

Prosecutors say the 32-year-old came prepared to kill, packing a .25-caliber handgun and knife, neglecting to call police and leaving behind a crime scene that investigators described as among the most gruesome they'd ever seen.

"This is not a case of whodunit," prosecutor Juan Martinez said in his opening statement. "The person who committed this killing sits in court today."

Arias repeatedly changed her stories about the killing that could land her on death row if convicted. She first denied any involvement, then blamed it on masked intruders before finally confessing.

The case now rests largely on intent. Her attorneys are trying to convince jurors she was an abused woman defending herself from an enraged ex-boyfriend ? something experts say will be difficult given the evidence.

"Why did she bring a gun to a love fest for one?" said San Francisco criminal defense lawyer Michael Cardoza. "This is about damage control now. No jury is going to let this lady walk. It's just about trying to save her life."

The story began in fall 2007, when Alexander met Arias, an aspiring photographer, at a Las Vegas convention. The two began dating, and the stormy relationship went on for about five months. At the time, Arias was living in Southern California and would visit Alexander at his Mesa home.

Friends of the man say she practically lived there from time to time, and that Alexander became bothered with her possessiveness and jealousy. They say he broke it off and that she stalked him for months, slashing his tires and hacking into his Facebook account.

She claims she ended the relationship after catching him in too many lies. But she says it was at his urging that she moved to Mesa from California for a time after their breakup.

He started dating other women, yet the two continued to have sex up until the day of his death.

They exchanged thousands of emails and text messages. He sent her photos of his genitalia and requested she wear a French maid outfit while cleaning his house. She sent explicit messages; he told her it appeared he was nothing more than a sex toy "with a heartbeat."

The profile of Alexander is in sharp contrast to what some friends and family knew. Many believed him to be a devout Mormon who was saving sex for marriage. Friends said Arias also converted to Mormonism after they started dating.

"This year will be the best year of my life. ... I will earn more, learn more, travel more, serve more, love more, give more and be more than all the other years of my life combined. ... And how will I do this? By strict obedience to the commandments of God," Alexander wrote in a blog post before his death.

Arias' challenges are formidable. Police say her bloody palm print and hair were found at the crime scene, along with the photographs on a camera inside Alexander's washing machine. In addition, authorities say Arias' grandparents reported a .25 caliber gun ?the same caliber used in the slaying ? stolen from their Northern California home about a week before the killing. Arias was staying with them at the time.

No weapons were found at the crime scene. Arias' attorneys have yet to explain why she washed Alexander's bedding and put the camera in the washing machine, why she left his body in the shower without reporting anything to authorities, and why she lied repeatedly to investigators.

All of this, combined with the sheer brutality of the attack, makes it more difficult for a defense attorney to do anything but attempt to spare her the death penalty, experts say.

"Her changing stories, the confession, the forensic evidence, it's just a very difficult case to defend," said California criminal defense lawyer Mark Geragos.

Geragos said her only hope is if defense attorneys can convince jurors Alexander was abusive, and that he attacked her on the day he was killed.

"They're going to need expert witnesses to clean up her mess," Geragos said. "The biggest problem is, she's given all these different stories that don't comport with the facts, and now she's admitted doing it."

As she sat in jail just three months after her arrest, Arias was adamant ? at this point sticking with her second story about the intruders ? that she was innocent of the crime.

In an interview with "Inside Edition," she was certain jurors would believe her.

"No jury is going to convict me," she said. "I am innocent and you can mark my words on that."

Life of Pi and Other politically correct cover ups - Blogger News ...

Read 188 times.

What does the UK Guardian asking for us to reconsider the crime of pedophilia, and the Life of Pi have in common?

Making up pretty lies to confuse the reality of the crime.

The Guardian insists that the crime of having sex with children isn?t bad and such impulses should just be accepted as part of the spectrum of sexuality, not something that we should be ashamed of.

They remind us that many reports show children aren?t harmed by being raped, so we should just let those who abused them live in society while helping them to restrain their impulses.

Hmm?sounds like the advice of certain pschologists to the Catholic Bishops in the 1980?s, and the advice that experts told physician back then: Reporting the case and taking it to court just harmed the child more than the abuse, which probably didn?t hurt the child, so don?t make a big deal about it, even if the case involved incest.

Heh. Seems like California tried this back in the 1980?s, and it didn?t work very well.

it is shocking to realise how dramatically attitudes to paedophilia have changed in just three decades, it is even more surprising to discover how little agreement there is even now among those who are considered experts on the subject.

A liberal professor of psychology who studied in the late 1970s will see things very differently from someone working in child protection, or with convicted sex offenders. There is, astonishingly, not even a full academic consensus on whether consensual paedophilic relations necessarily cause?harm.

Why were such lies believed? Because the predator had his own version of the story, in which he is lovingly helping the boy or girl, or maybe even that the boy or girl wanted sex so he had to go along with their desire.

Those of us who worked with victims know that the problem is that the kids often want affection (which is why fatherless children are so vulnerable) and then, when affection turns into rape, they again are conflicted. The pleasure of sex (sometimes, but not always) and the pleasure of closeness often vie with the idea that they don?t want to say no to what they find horrible. And if they threaten to report it, often the pedophile turns on them and says ?well you wanted it?, making the child believe this.

And what happens when they report it? I?ve had women tell of how their moms accused them of stealing their boyfriend or seducing their own father/stepfather, and Newsweek once had an article claiming that counselers should not report such crimes because it would ?break up the family?.

Similarly, often the male homosexual who preys on young teenagers sees it as part of mentoring a boy, who is gay and needs a role model. He puts a romantic story of love and care of the boy, and then twists the story to say it was okay because the boy was old enough (only those puritanical laws make it wrong) and the relationship was mutual.

You repaint the story to make you the hero, and if that fails, you retell the story saying they seduced you, or retell the story as loving that society condemns because society is so puritanical about sex.

You keep retelling the fake story until people believe you, and make the witness doubt what they saw, and voila, you get away scott free. (which is what happened in Penn State, or? in the Woody Allen incest case, or even in season three of the veddy upright BBC series Downton Abbey, where an older servant attacks a teenaged servant during the night).

In a similar fashion, the Life of Pi claims to be about God, and is an inspiring and beautifully filmed story. If, that is, until the end, when an ?alternative? story is revealed.

The agents tell Pi that his story ? which includes multiple animal companions and a?carnivorous island ? is too unbelievable for them to report, so Pi tells them a different version of the story: one that paints a much darker and emotionally disturbing variation of events. After both stories have been shared, Pi leaves it up to the viewer (or reader) to decide which version they ?prefer.?

Yes, ?prefer?. In other words, the truth doesn?t matter, folks, so let?s just move along.

If the tiger version was a ?false memory syndrome?, the boy would have stuck with the story.

If the tiger story was a hallucination, he would have stuck with the story.

If the tiger story was his imaginative way of coping with reality, he would have broken down and started to cry before telling the real story and then admitting it.

But no, he tells a second story in a cool manner, and then says it?s up to you to believe which is true, which in the movie they do.

Huh? Well, I bet the cops, like myself, figure his second story is fake too. We?ve seen and heard too many similar fake stories to believe the first story, and since the man blithely lies about the first story, why should we believe the second one? (So why don?t the cops arrest him? No physical proof of a crime. Lots of criminals and sexual predators get away with stuff because it?s so hard to prove in court).

The movie says, well truth doesn?t matter. Yeah. That fits in with today?s sophisticated mindset. What is truth, asked a jaded sophisticate when confronted with a hayseed carpenter.

The film concludes by asking you which story you believe, after you watched a long romantic story of a tiger.

Of course the audience, even when confronted with the second story, discusses and argues over which one is reality (why believe the horrific story when the pretty one is so much nicer to believe?) and maybe even doesn?t even recognize the manipulation of the film/novel.

So why am I complaining? Well, truth does matter.

Spinning padeophila into a variation of normal loving sexuality ignores that there is a lot of victims out there who are not getting justice: this the cdc survey shows six percent of students, ten percent of boys, and over 20 percent of boys who identify as gay report having intercourse below age 13. True, a few cases might be ?consensual?, but I suspect the reality is that there is a lot of sexual abuse of children below age 13 going on that isn?t reported.

It?s always nicer to believe the story of the tiger (it was a loving relationship) or the story of the innocent victim (she seduced me).So the UKGuardian says let?s not be so judgmental about such things. (translation: The BBC can?t afford the lawsuits on the Jimmy Saville abuse coverup). Which story do you believe, the romantic tiger (we were in love) or the reality. One wonders how? many of the teenagers using drugs or with other ?bad health habits? are among those who were sexually abused .

Similarly, in the Life of Pi, which story do you believe?

It?s nicer and easier to start a conversation about this, as most of the movie and book reviewers of Pi seem to be doing, and then praise the beauty of the cinematography or debate the question of God than to confront what might be the real story, which isn?t even discussed in the film: That they boy is a manipulative sociopath who was the real killer.

Don?t believe me? Ask your local cop how he would interpret the story.
