Straight after the Canary trip we flew back to Austria through D?sseldorf. We had just 1 and a half day to organise things for a 3 week Turkey-Greece trip, pick up the post, pick up a repaired sail, getting the right gear sorted out. What a stress!

Thanks to the help of our friends J?rgen and David we got lifts from the airport to our home and the other way around. Travelling with 4 boardbags and two big bags to Izmir through Istanbul was a big workout. When we arrived at our final destination in Izmir, not one bag had been arrived on the belt. It needed us more than 6 hours waiting at the airport for all the gear, which got delivered by Turkish Airlines time by time.

Late at midnight we arrived at our Hotel, called Otel Bakirli at Alacti.

The competition started straight on the following day and my motivation was down. I felt so tired plus the motivation was a bit down. All my gearbags were directly in the sun, no shade available. I had been arrived too late definitely this time. Plus went on too big gear, using my 9,6 m Reflex too often. I definitely should have changed to the 8,6 quicker, which fits extremely good my body size and weight for light wind.

No shade for guys, who were a bit later arriving. That was my spot.

I managed to get a 5th in the first round of the first elimination, which was not enough to advance in the quarter final, but was ok? sailing on the big gear fully overpowered. In the second elimination the PWA racemanagement went with a new seeding system sailing in groups of 11 people in the first round. I just passed many people swimming at the first mark, when a Turkish sailor pulled his sail against my boardnose and I got locked inside his boom. That was extremely bad luck just finishing in 10th and second last position of this round. What a nightmare! I got so high points! For sure the discard!

In elimination 3 I saw myself with a worldclass fleet in the first round: Maynard, Dunkerbeck, Williams, Mortefon. The start was slow and I finished 7th out of 8th.

In the 4th race, we also sailed on day 2 of the event ? ?I felt less tired, more aggressive again and started quite good together with Cyril at the top near the boat. I could not overtake Cyril, so I had to take the direct shortcut to the mark behind his tail, sneaking in in front of some guys and showed up in front of Cyril after the jibe, but without speed at the end of the mark one. It needed me too much time to pick up the speed again. Cyril and Andrea overtook me easily. I always stayed close to Andrea Cucchi, who was in 4th position, but never had a chance to attack him. 5th again!

Elimination number 5, which never saw a valid result!

After day 2 the wind dropped completely, just went for freesailing, testing, tuning, repairing a broken batton. Thanks to Kerstin, Gunnar Asmussen and Ben van der Steen for the help! On the final day, the 14th, we saw some little comeback of the Meltemi.

I decided to go with the iSonic 131 tuned by the Pfaffi fin 48,5 cm plus the Reflex 8,6. I had a ok start up at the boat, but felt good speed plus free wind and could pass Jesper Orth on the first leg following Arnon Dagan and the eventleader Micah Buzianis. Jesper overtook me at the second jibe again, because I opened him the door jibing to wide, but the Danish Aussie struggled at the 4th and I came in third position again. Damien Le Guen could not get me this time. I was extremely happy making it up in the quarterfinals. And it did not feel like hard work. I had freewind and stable speed cruising through the lulls. Before the race I got my boom up by 5 cm, which perhaps helped me to find a more stable position on board.

Unluckily this round did not see 12 valid runs and the result did not count anymore. Next time I will continue with a heat like I finished here at Alacati!

I only finished in 49th position at Alacati, which dissapoints a lot. Overall I lost 4 positions as well and felt back from 38th in 42nd position. It was the fourth time competing in Alacati, but was my worst result so far. The fifth race would have changed my result a bit. One more race is on the calendar, the final at Westerland, Sylt, which starts on the 23rd of September. I will get myself tuned as good as possible and show, how good I am. See you on Sylt!

Depressing gender census data in India and tackling the problem (Pickled Politics)

The latest figures from India's national census make for grim reading. Between
2001 and 2011 the gender ratio (number of girls compared to number of boys per
thousand) worsened, with only 914 girls for every 1000 boys being recorded,
down from a ratio of 974:1000 in 1961. Some of the worst offending states,
especially Haryana, did see slight improvements, but this was more than offset
by the decline in Southern India, which traditionally has been less anti-
female than the north. Much of the gap is due female foetuses being aborted.
But infanticide (the killing of babies/infants) is also widespread, with young
girls being murdered all over India. What though can be done about it?
Lifting people out of poverty is often the answer to many issues, but not this
one. In the last twenty years, India has got richer, yet the gender imbalance
is worse. It is often richer families who abort female foetuses, as they have
access to ultrasounds and the money to pay for an abortion. As Rita Banerji's

Become the Memorial Day Grill Master [Grilling]

Kevin Purdy ?Memorial Day marks the start of the serious grilling season, and there's no better weekend to try your hand at outdoor cooking, or bolster your established grill-master game. Luckily, honing your outdoor culinary skills is a lot more simple than it seems, given the right tools, a little preparation, and a few tips on technique. Here's a look at some pointers on getting the right gear, turning out great meals, and even preparing for uncooperative weather.

Get the right tools

• Lump charcoal or briquettes?: This is one of those endless, both-sides-are-right-and-wrong debates (kind of like Mac vs. PC), but there is some fairly common ground. As The Virtual Weber Bullet puts it:

  The general consensus is that lump tends to burn hotter than briquettes, but not as long or as consistently. Some lack of consistency is to be expected, given that the content and piece size varies within an individual bag and between bags.

  Personally, I recommend briquettes for anyone just starting out with their grill, as lump can be finicky in lighting. • Choosing a gas grill: Ignore the BTUs and heat for the most part?unless you really need to cook a whole bird or roast this weekend, most grills have got your steaks and burgers covered. Consumer Reports' blog recommends bringing a magnet with you to gauge the quality of steel used to contain the heat. If the magnet sticks, it's likely a cheaper grade that will rust more easily. Feel free to give a test model a few shoves and shakes, as an unstable grill is a recipe for serious problems.
• Multi-use utensils: The three-tool grilling sets you see at big-box stores have all you'll need for basic grill work, with long-handled versions of a spatula, tongs, and a carving-type poker. A long-handle brush would be your next purchase, and then a grilling basket and skewers when you start branching out. Make sure your tools feel heavy and firm in your hands, as clumsy handling creates the kind of BBQ stories you don't want repeated. Photo by rick.

Hone your technique

• Use a cheat sheet: Experience is the best indicator for knowing the precise moment to yank your food off the rack, but Real Simple offers a super-helpful cheat sheet you can print and bring to this culinary test (original post). Here's a sample that covers the basics of red meat and sausages:
• BBQ chicken: As my fellow editor Adam can attest, eHow's technique for grilling whole or partial chicken results in some juicy bird. The basics: Oil the grill, cook the chicken uncovered slightly off the heat center, and, for Pete's sake, don't put your sauce on until the last few minutes.
• Perfect burgers: Our commenters don't necessarily agree on cooking great burgers, but they do have some common wisdom to share. Use meat that's as close to room temperature as possible for even cooking. Don't press them on the grill, unless you like your meat dry. And the best "secret" to great burgers is buying good meat, preferably ground by a butcher while you watch.
• Seriously salt your steak: Got filet mignon dreams for the weekend, but only a Quarter-Pounder budget? Buy a cheap cut of "choice" meat, then salt, salt, salt the heck out of that thing?for only one hour before grilling, and then pat it dry. By doing so, your salt is breaking in your meat and loosening some of its protein strands, making it hold flavor better and cut like the steakhouse commercials of your dreams (original post).
• Let it rest: You'll be eager to slice open your tender steak or succulent chicken, but you'll lose a lot of juicy flavor if you do so. As the food techies at Cook's Illustrated point out, cutting into your food right off the grill releases a significant amount of juice, which would be re-absorbed for better succulence if you let it sit a few minutes.

Recover from a rain-out

All that planning, cleaning, and purchasing, and Mother Nature calls an audible on your perfect grill day? You're not finished yet. As the New York Times' food guru and cookbook author Mark Bittman points out, your oven broiler can sub in for your grill with a little prep-work, with results almost as satisfying. Brown your meat in the pan, roast or braise it slowly, then use the broiler to give it that grill-like finish. Check out his oven-based pork ribs or brisket recipes if you need convincing.

Document your success

When you've put all this effort into creating a great fire-cooked feast, you'll want more than just compliments to remember it by. Break out your digital camera (or pass it off to a trusted friend) and try the following tips to take some great grilling shots. (Photo by ctaloi):

• Tell a story: A BBQ-friendly shooter named Nika notes that a lot of grilled food might look good to the human eye, but smoky crusts and perfect charring can look like unappealing dark nothingness without good framing. Buzz Kill: Federal Warnings Hit Medical Pot Boom

From California to Arizona, Colorado to Maine, states across the country are legalizing the sale of medical marijuana. Recent warnings from U.S. attorneys, however, are making local governments rethink their plans.

Seth Bock stands in what's supposed to be one of Rhode Island's first medical marijuana stores. His group was going to install grow lights and a ventilation system this week, but not anymore.

"We can't really invest any money into the carpentry and the building process until we know that this will go on," he says.

But that could take a while. Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee has put the program on hold indefinitely. The reason: a letter he received from the U.S. Attorneys' Office that said Rhode Island's so-called compassion centers could face federal raids, fines or criminal prosecution if they open.

"The U.S. attorney was very direct," governor's spokesman Michael Trainor says. "The governor believes that if we proceed on the present course, he'd be putting the compassion centers and people associated with compassion centers at great risk."

Rhode Island's letter is similar to those sent to at least eight other states with medical marijuana programs. Advocates believe the threats are a dramatic change from the Obama administration's original stance on medical marijuana. The Justice Department has refused to clarify its decision, saying only that its policy remains the same. It says the U.S. attorneys assigned to each state have "discretion" about how to enforce that policy.

The Ogden Memo

What the policy is, exactly, depends on how you interpret what's called "the Ogden memo."

"In 2009, the Department of Justice indicated that it would be a low priority to prosecute anyone who was complying with state medical marijuana laws," Jay Rorty of the American Civil Liberties Union explains. He says the 2009 memo from then-Deputy Attorney General David Ogden made advocates think the federal government wouldn't interfere with state medical marijuana stores.

U.S. Attorney Michael Ormsby from Washington state disagrees with that interpretation. "I think the ACLU takes that statement out of context," he says. According to him, the memo means the federal government won't go after patients who are growing their own marijuana ? but retail stores were never part of that exception.

"We're talking, in some instances, about thousands of dollars a week being generated by these enterprises," he says.

It's a problem familiar to Colorado's Attorney General John Suthers. He says Colorado's more than 800 dispensaries are probably not what the federal government had in mind when it issued the Ogden memo.

"We've had just a plethora of retail dispensaries develop. We've got grow operations; we're now at 125,000 patients," he says. "And it's a joke."

That's why he asked his U.S. attorney for advice. Suthers guesses that the letters from other U.S. attorneys are an attempt to prevent more states from becoming like Colorado.

Meanwhile, States Have Patients

How each state interprets those letters is different. Some are going ahead with their programs despite the warnings. Others are in the same limbo as Rhode Island, where patients are getting frustrated.

"I don't know about you, but I feel mad. Do you?" Ellen Lenox Smith is a familiar face at the podium in the Rhode Island State House.
