Deer Hunting Can Be a Family Affair

8:29 pm Recreation and Sports

Since man learned to fashion crude weapons, deer hunting has been a prime way to get necessary food for the family.? It isn?t necessary today?to track and kill?food?to?avoid starvation.? However, the sport of hunting deer as well as other wild game has remained a popular pastime for men and women through the years.? Fathers and sons or even daughters have bonded over the thrill of waiting for the perfect buck to appear in a clearing while they silently and stealthily prepare to pull the trigger or draw back?the bow.

Whitetail deer are the type of deer most often found in?the?US east of the Rockies.??Mule deer and a subspecies, blacktailed deer, are found in the western US and along the West Coast.? These deer differ in size, shape of their tails and ears and the shape and formation of their antlers.? Deer are found in every state in the US, including Hawaii.? Since deer overpopulation has become rampant in large areas of the country, deer hunting is encouraged to help prevent disease and food shortages within the herds and?accidents between the deer automobiles.

There are several different ways that deer are hunted.? When deer hunting by stalking, a hunter will follow deer trails looking for his quarry.? A similar technique is called still hunting, a method by which a hunter alternately walks quietly and then waits in a concealed area for game.? In line drives, a line of hunters walks through woods or grassland toward another line of hunters that may be concealed, hoping to take a shot at deer that are flushed out.? In spot and stalk hunting, the hunter sights the deer first and then stalks it.? The most popular kind of hunting is stand hunting.? A hunter will wait in a concealed tree stand or ground blind close to areas where deer are likely to travel.? The tree stand is usually constructed between 10 and 15 feet high; the ground blind is a small camo-colored plastic shelter.

Different types of weapons used in deer hunting include compound bows, longbows?and?crossbows, rifles, shotguns, and even muzzleloaders.? Deer hunters find they need other equipment?such as camouflage clothing, deer calls, lures, and even?walkie talkies and hand-held GPS units.? All of these items can help a deer hunter have a successful time in the woods.?
